One thing Greenwood, Ms is known for is it has some of the greatest restaurants in the south. I am sure in the near future we will cover a few more of them on our Top Duck Dive list. Greenwood sits right in the heart of some of the best duck hunting in the world. To the south you have Matthews Break, to the north, you have Malmaison and The Scatters, and to the west, you have what I call the Highway 82 flyaway. When duck season rolls around so do the duck hunters. In the first few duck dives, we name on our list; I want to cover the ones that go that extra mile in catering to the guys in camo early in the morning.
One that realizes the value of duck hunters and their business is Honest Abe’s. Located on Park Avenue, Honest Abe’s, like the Blue and White in Tunica and The Varsity in Belzoni, lives by the the old phrase “The early bird catches the worm.” During duck season, Honest Abe’s unlocks the doors at five in the morning for those headed to the blind and need a quick bite. The smell of fresh donuts, when you enter, is mesmerizing. The smell almost makes you feel like you are floating dragging your feet behind like in an old Hannah Barbara cartoon character.
I could go on and on about the donuts because they are A+, but to this writer, the donuts aren’t even the best thing on the menu. If there is one thing Honest Abe’s is known for, it is the hot tamales. According to Ms. Mary, the manager, the tamales are made fresh every day. They are awesome. There are those that aren’t big fans of hot tamales. I get it. I used to be one of those people. That was until I tried some of Honest Abe’s last year. If you are one of those people, I dare you to go in and order a half a dozen and let me know if they convert you to a tamale freak.
I wouldn’t be doing Honest Abe’s justice if I didn’t also tell you about the chicken salad. Chicken salad has gotten a bad rap over the years for guys because it is known as chick food. If you are having a hard time picking out something off the lunch menu, try the chicken salad sandwich. Good Stuff!
If you are around the Greenwood area this duck season, swing by Honest Abe’s early before the hunt or after the hunt is over. I promise you won’t be the only one dressed in camo or regret stopping by. Congrats again to Honest Abe’s on being named one of Ducksouth’s “Top Duck Dives”.
