Top Duck Dives in The South: The Blue and White

Sitting on the west side of Highway 61, in the heart of Tunica, MS, is one of the oldest and most famous duck dives in the South, the Blue and White. The Blue and White is one of those landmarks we talked about last week.  Ask anyone that has been to Tunica for hunting, business, or pleasure and they know what and where the Blue and White is. They will tell you to try this for breakfast and this for lunch. I made a couple of phone calls on my trip over the other day. I told them I was headed to the Blue and White and they told me different things I had to try. The reputation of the Blue and White is very high among my friends.

img_2038I arrived later to the restaurant than most breakfast goers for the simple reason to have time to visit with the staff and also with some of the clientele. I don’t think I have ever met a more friendly staff and management at a restaurant in a long time. All I had to do was tell them I was a duck hunter and the information starting pouring out.  They told me how accommodating they were to their duck hunting clientele. They even change the opening time for the restaurant during duck season. They open at four just for duck hunters in duck season to sit down and grab a bite before the hunt or just to grab biscuit on the way to the duck hole. That is what I call “Duck Hunter Friendly”. How duck hunter friendly are they? They must have made a lasting impression on the some of the best duck hunters in the world. The guys from RNT made a box of calls especially for the Blue and White because of their hospitality. You guessed it! They are blue and white and have the name of the restaurant on them.

Let me discuss my experience, though. I took my three year old son along with me on the trip. We walked in, not knowing what to expect, but as I looked around I was taken back to being a kid going to a local diner with my Dad.  I looked down at him and he looked back up at me and we both smiled. I couldn’t help but think this is how my Dad used to walk in with me to that little diner in Tchula, MS. Hungry and proud that his son was with him. We took a booth by the counter and from beginning to end, the service was awesome and done with a smile. Most of the workers have been there a while and when my server told me that, it spoke highly of the restaurant. Restaurants are known for employee turnover, but not here.

I could not resist getting the country fried steak breakfast. OH! MY! GOSH! It had two eggs-cooked to order, toast, country fried steak smothered in white gravy, and served with hash browns. I told you I walked in starving, right? I could not finish but about half of my breakfast. I had to save a little room for my dessert. That’s right! I had dessert with my breakfast. A homemade doughnut that was smothered in icing. Do I really need to say more?

Country Fried Steak Breakfast

Even if you are not a duck hunter, I encourage you to make the trip to Tunica, MS to eat at the Blue and White. I wasn’t there for the lunch service and really don’t know where I would have put any anyway, but I have heard the fried green tomatoes are just like grandma used to make them. After I posted a video on facebook, several ducksouth users messaged me saying I missed out only being there for breakfast. They told me the lunch buffet is phenomenal. I can’t wait to go back.
