Top Duck Dives in The South: The Varsity

Landmarks; every geographical area has one. When I first started my guide service over twenty years ago, the landmark that guided people to my lodge was a hundred year old oak tree that sat at the end of my county road next to the highway. The strange sounds given to me through the phone by clients after telling them to just turn by the oak tree were priceless. That big oak tree, until it was taken out by a tornado a few years ago, was the only thing you saw for a few miles coming out of Swiftown or Morgan City.

The Varsity, just so happens to be Belzoni, Mississippi’s landmark and one of the “Top Duck Dives” in the south. Sitting on what I call ” Joey’s Corner”, as taught to me by my wife who is a former resident of Belzoni, The Varsity is the hangout for residents and non-residents alike. The residents of Belzoni even have their own table at the front. If you sit there and not be a resident of Belzoni, most at the table will give you a strange look, but after the ice is broken you will feel like you are a fellow Belzonian.

What makes The Varsity one of our top “Duck Dives”? If you pull up in the parking lot during hunting season, the old white concrete building is surrounded by muddy four wheel drives, boats and UTV’s on trailers, and the smell of bacon knocks you down when you get out of your vehicle. Hunters drive for miles to get to The Varsity after a tough cold morning in the field.

The Varsity opened in the fifties and is not to be mistaken with The Varsity in Atlanta, Ga. I have eaten at both and would choose the one in Belzoni every time.

The cool thing about the Varsity is you never know who may walk through the door next. I have seen from the hunting world Mountain Man, Will Primos, and Mike Morgan. I have even seen CEO’s and business leaders of fortune 500 companies decked out in camo dining in the famous establishment.

So, the next time you have to be anywhere close to Belzoni, Ms, take a turn off Hwy. 49 onto Hwy. 7 and pull into The Varsity. I promise you will not regret it.
