What Do I Need To Know Before Going Duck Hunting In Canada?

Here are a few things to consider when visiting our neighbor to the North for a duck hunt:

  • When taking a trip outside of the US to Canada, you have to take into consideration that the country is very sparsely populated and your accommodations are going to be spread further apart than in the United States.
  • Ideally, what you’d like to do is combine a large town that has your accommodations, your food, and hunting locations. Stay as close as you can to where your hunts will take place.
  • When traveling across the border, it’s important to remember to have your paperwork in order. If you’re taking a dog make sure that you look into the regulations for taking a dog across the border. That may include vaccination records, health records of the dog, and there is also a timeframe of which you need to have those.
  • Other things that you need to think about is transporting firearms across the border. There is  paperwork that needs to be filled out beforehand. We do know that customs don’t like that paperwork being filled out at the counter while you’re trying to cross the border.
  • That paperwork also has to be signed in front of a customs agent, not prior to getting to the borders.
  • When you fill out that paperwork before you get there, make sure you don’t sign it until you’re in front of a customs officer.
  • One of the biggest things to remember when crossing the border is to tell the truth. Whatever questions they have, tell them what they need to know, answer them truthfully, and don’t try to hide anything. If you try to hide anything, they’re going to know and they’re going to bust you on it. Any time spent in a Canadian jail will ruin a good duck hunting trip.
  • When traveling to Canada, you are in a high roaming area outside of the United States.  If you do not have a roaming or an international plan on your cell phone and you plan on using it while you’re up there, I suggest you get one.
  • Make sure you notify your bank of your travels. It is very difficult to get gas at 3 AM at a gas station that’s in the middle of nowhere with your debit card. Especially, if that card does not work outside of the United States or because the bank has put a hold on the debit card, not knowing if you’re traveling.

By utilizing these few tips, it will ensure that you have a smooth border crossing and a more successful and stress free hunt in Canada.
