Fishing Report for Week of 2-24-17

IMG_2913Look guys, I know that for the most part this duck season was one you wanted to put behind you. It was rough! But I know many of you have boats and all of you have waders, so don’t put them up just yet. The recent warm weather trend in the southeast has some of the best bass and crappie producing lakes turning the meter from cold to hot really fast! This short rundown of what is happening is the first fishing report we have produced and definitely not the last. As a matter of fact we will be actively growing the fishing reports every week and as more reports come in from different lakes and waterways across the southeast we will be adding them to the weekly reports. Now, here are the reasons to keep the boat and waders out!

It is no secret to crappie fishermen that lake Washington is an early “go to” spot to catch monster crappie each year. The warm weather that has hit Mississippi has had the fish very active in water 12-18 feet deep. Pulling roadrunners and crank-baits have been the key to putting limits in the boat as these fish are staging in slightly deeper water just out from where they will spawn.

The report for the “Mississippi trio” including Sardis, Enid and Grenada is similar to that of lake Washington although the water is not as high as some fisherman would like in those lakes just yet. There have also been reports this week of fish being caught wading in areas around stumps and fallen logs in depths less than 4 feet.

Pickwick is also heating up especially for largemouth bass. The areas of transition from really deep water to more shallow coves have been the key to catching big bass and big numbers of bass. Alabama rigs and crank-baits have been the go to baits for catching these bass in the transition to the spring spawn.

Reports have slowly but surely piled up along the Mississippi and Louisiana coast as well following the end of duck season. The redfish are on the move but the key for most anglers have been the speckled trout. There has been some luck fishing under popper corks but the best fishing has been found on artificial bait, especially the last few days around outside reefs and the rivers.

The weather across the south has anglers excited for sure. There are a few areas of rain forecasted but overall the fishing in the southeast should continue to pick up as the warm weather continues to greet the longer days. We hope that this report helps with your weekend plans and look for it to grow as the reports begin to roll in from dozens of lakes in the next few weeks!
