Bring on The Fish and Turkeys! Spring is Officially Here!

Well, as of two days ago we have officially entered spring. I am well aware that it has looked and felt like spring for a long time now but we have finally reached the point where we can walk outside with a little pep in our step because the spring air brings two amazing opportunities to outdoorsmen and women that are highly anticipated each year. We have finally reached the point or “crossed the line” into the days of hard gobbling turkeys and the fast action of fishing the crappie spawn.

spingpic2For a few weeks you have heard me talk about the crappie action rising and falling across the southeast and in the world famous lakes of Grenada, Ross Barnett and lake Washington. I admit that while the action has remained fairly steady given the somewhat wild weather that hit recently the best days are yet to come. As a matter of fact they are approaching at an extremely fast pace. The water has come up in Grenada allowing fishermen to reach new places and with that some fantastic fishing action has come from jigging both from boats and wading in the last few days. The weather forecast is extremely promising for the next week and weekend so prepare yourself now as the bulk of the big females are just days away from “crossing the line” and begin biting really well!

Now, there is another phenomenon that spring brings us each year and it is one that I look forward to the most. As the trees turn green and the dogwoods bloom, turkeys begin to not only become more active on the roost but they are usually apt to get hot at any point of the day. I would have to look back at my journals to know the exact number of mid-day, hard gobbling birds I have harvested but I can tell you that there is simply nothing else like it and with the weather and conditions in our favor for the next week to ten days, the turkeys can reach the point any time of “crossing the line” and getting on a hot gobbling streak!

Good luck, God bless, and don’t go crossing any lines of any kind yourself!
