Headed Back North

Great news duck hunters! I know that for weeks and weeks you had to listen while I complained about the low numbers of gadwalls in the Mississippi delta. Well, fear no more, because as of this week the brakes are full of grey ducks and there are teal around every corner. That’s right, just when you thought we wouldn’t see the famed cypress and tupelo gum brakes of the Mississippi Delta hold a decent number of ducks they show up in full force. But of course it is March and duck season is a long, long ways away.

I admit that it is quiet frustrating to see the number of ducks that are in the area right now. We have now had two miserable seasons in a row and to wake up and try to turkey hunt with gadwalls, teal and mallards filling up every inch of water in site I just drive by and shake my head. It would be easy to ask why now and why not three months ago. It would be easy to say that season should run longer. It would also be easy to say that this is not the good ole days and the hunting will never be the same. But instead of all that I am actually pleased to see the birds show up. Truth is, they are simply headed back north from spending the winter in the Louisiana marshes and I am truly elated at the number of birds that are making the trek. And even though I didn’t get to see very many fall through the treetops during duck season, It’s pretty magical to see them do it now while a turkey is gobbling in the very trees they are crashing through. So I guess it’s a great victory. I get to hunt one of the finest creatures God ever created, the wild turkey and at the same time I am gaining a great deal of confidence in knowing that very strong duck numbers are headed back north for the spring nesting season. The glass is half full boys and girls!!
