How many miles is too many on a truck?

Postby photoshop » Mon Nov 09, 2009 9:15 am

I have had my truck since 2005 and it has 150K on it. Its never had any trouble but how many miles is too many before I need to worry about it. I take care of it but I have never had a vehicle with this many miles on it. Just curious to what you guys think. Thanks for your help.

My opinion is there is no such number. If the truck wants to go 500k miles, then so be it. Now if you find that you start repairing things often, make a decission how much you want to spend on repairs to keep it.

Depends on what brand it is. The major thing is how well was it taken care of during the 150k miles. Drive it until repairs cost more than a monthly payment, or it becomes unreliable.

Not sure what brand you have, but I have had very good luck out of high mileage toyotas. Can't say the same for gm,ford. YMMV
Everything is illegal now, except for the stuff that's mandatory.

Allot of the vehicles these days dont even recommend you change the spark plugs until 100,000 miles...

I wouldn't let 150k miles worry you at all...
Sometimes you just have to close your eyes, count to ten, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you wouldn't look good in prison stripes... and just smile at that dumbass and walk away.

The HD's are designed to go for a long time. I had a 89 Toyota that when I sold it, it 489,000 on it, but the odometer didn't for about year it is still runnin around. The guy I sold it to uses it to pull his boat to the river. I'd say when monthly cost of repairs over serval months is higher than that of a payment get a new one.

I am on my 3rd 2500 truck. The current one (GMC) just turned 300,000 on the odometer. Had to put an injection pump on it two weeks ago ($2100). Only real repair I have had this year. My last 2500 truck (GMC) had 440,000+ on it when I traded. Motor and transmission was still good, but was working alot of rice ground at the time and the inside was just falling apart. Before that truck I had another 3/4 ton Chevy that went 3 years after the odometer had quit working which was stopped on 275,000+. All of these were diesel trucks by the way. I would think 150,000 miles is only 1/3 to 1/2 of the life of the truck unless it is experiencing some type of problems which may run into having to replace a motor or something. The value of a truck certainly comes AFTER 100,000 miles in my opinion. My Dad is driving a 2002 Chevy 1500 Vortec that has 350,000+ on it. He runs the crap out of it too. Anybody may come across a lemon from time to time, but I think 250,000 has become to be expected out of these vehicles now.

It runs like a top. it still looks good too. I just have always traded before and now I am gonna keep this thing and wanted to know some you guys stories. It makes me feel better about it to hear stuff like that 250,000 mile stuff too.

I think you just answered your own question. And for the record, my S-10 has over 385,000 miles on it. I'm looking to replace it because a bunch of little (and some big) stuff needs to be replaced, repaired, or otherwise changed and it would be cost prohibitive to do anything but replace the whole darn thing. However, I'm just not real interested in having a payment book either.

I'm driving a 96 model Isuzu Trooper that has 290,000 miles on it. I'm starting to have to replace some parts from time to time. I'll be using it to pull 2 ATVs and hunting gear to NE Arkansas this season again.

i've posted up a few times of a few truck issues but those smaller issues are better than a monthly payment. 200k on the 99 Ford with the 4.6.. seems to be running well..

All depends. Diesel trade in drops pretty hard after 200K. Gas trade in drops at 100K. If you're not looking to trade in all the time, run it till it costs more to keep up than a note would be, or until you're tired of it and want a new one. Trucks will run a long time if you keep 'em up.

to many miles = the mole after it stops being reliable.
