I never have been able to decide for myself that rumor about moss. It seems pretty inconsistent to me. Moss does grow better on the north side of trailers, though.

I had one of the early Garmin units and it wouldn't pick up anything. I could stand in an open field sometimes and it wouldn't get a fix. When they came out with the better receivers I bought one of the newer Garmin units and haven't had any problems.

I went antelope hunting in Wyoming a few years ago with this new unit. In the middle of 40,000 acres I stuck a pocket knife in the ground and marked it in the GPS. Hunted all around that knife for 5 days and then told the GPS to take me back to the knife. It took me right back to it.

I've got everything from deer stands to duck holes to brush tops for crappie fishing saved in mine. It is a great tool, but, does not take the place of good woodsmanship. Like any equipment, it can and will fail. Just have a compass with you and make sure you can use it if you have to.

Correction, I was wrong, now that I'm home I pulled out my Garmin and it is a "38" NOT a "12".

So, the crummy Garmin is a "38".

I bought my first GPS 5 years ago. It was a Garmin Model 45. I had no trouble powering it up (starting it) but it went downhill from there. Never really got comfortable with it.

I recently purchased a Magellan Meridien Color unit using Ebay. Wal-Mart sells it for $449, but I got one for $360 on Ebay. This thing is ions better than the Garmin 45. Like most electronics, the technology advances 2 X per year. It is easy to use and easily locks in on the minimum 3 satellites necessary for an accurate fix, even inside my car.

I bought one for safety purposes. A group of us have some fields leased and there are always some treacherous ruts and holes in these fields. And every year they are in different spots. On those foggy days, in the dark, you need to know where you are going or you may end up with a 700 lb Grizzly on top of you (the Yamaha variety). But, the main reason I bought my new GPS is because a couple of our fields border on one of Wingman's places and I hear he shoots tresspassers on sight!!!

If you are looking for a good deal on a GPS, make sure you visit Ebay. There are some real deals on there.

I'm gonna go with the Garmin GPS MAP76 with all the memory it will handle (I think 8Mb). It's waterproof and I've acheived 6ft accuracy with it (anything equal to or less than 16ft is good in my book). In addition to waypoints, tracks, compass, etc., I want to utilize map source topo software and it'll take the memory to load plenty of it up.

I'd suggest a Magellan 315 also. Still available at WalMart, and cheaper on eBay. I owned a Garmin 12 (one of the earlier models) and had the same sort of problems people on here are saying about the Etrex. That cheap ole Magellan works in the woods, under clouds, in the fog, in the car, in the house, under water (well, I've actually not tried that yet).

We did a side-by-side comparison with the earlier Garmins and the Magellan 315, and the 315 blew the Garmins away. No contest. Haven't tried it with any of the later model Garmins though, but, from what people are saying about the Etrex, it sounds just like the older models - works sometimes.

Alright, I got one already. I went ahead and got a Garmin Rino 110. It is the one with the radio on it also. These things are pretty cool. It has a lot more stuff on it than I thought it had. I think it has a "scramble eggs" button on it somewhere. It was not the cheapest or the priciest, but middle of the road. I'll just have to read the manual to figure everything out now.

Oh yeah, My compass will stay pinned on my waders. Its one of them little "ball" deals you can get in the camping section at Wally world.
