Delta Waterfowl Banquets
Delta Waterfowl Banquets
I know some of you guys from down around Meridian got a chapter started last year. I was just curious about how everything went as far as organization, money, etc. Did it go over smoothly? We're starting a new chapter and I was just wanting some input from you guys.
Sometimes the best call is no call at all...
RLJames will be along shortly to add to this as he was the Chairman last year while this year the baton was handed to me. We are fortunate to have a committee of seasoned DU banquet veterans that decided to get behind Delta, so for us it was just a matter of getting to know how Delta operates their banquet programs. We had a surprisingly good turnout and raised quite a bit of $$$ in spite of the troubled economy.
Everything went very smoothly, Delta has an even better banquet package this year. They are just now getting their banquet concept going, as this is still pretty new to them. People are coming out of everywhere to help Delta Waterfowl and last year they were overwhelmed. This year will be better.
I can add that pre-selling tickets is always a big concern for any event. We quit worrying about that, people seem not to plan way ahead and don't want to buy a ticket just in case something else pops up. But, the head count at the door typically remains the same regardless of the amount of pre-sold tickets. Don't sweat it, the banquet goes on regardless anyway!
I will gladly help in any way. That's all I can think of right now.

Them ducks is wary. We now resume our regularly scheduled forum melee in progress.
How did you guys set up your local contribution? Did you do adopt a pothole, hen houses, local wood duck boxes, etc? Everyone up here seems to like the sound of these hen houses and predator management.
I must say, I like the way the organization presents itself. I believe that a lot of hunters will realize the importance of this organization in the future and see it as more than some banquet to go get hammered at. We're going to try to make ours fun as well as educational.
If any of you guys are in NE Mississippi and interested in coming, let me know.

gunner, hey you're in, you don't have to join up with Delta right away. Send me your physical street address and we'll start updating you with whatever we have going on. We still mail out our happenings, everyone doesn't have e-mail. It's hard to make every meeting but even if you miss every meeting we have but show up for the banquet to help out, that is still a major contribution from you and very much appreciated. When you buy your ticket to the banquet, membership is included, or you could join Delta today over web.
Banquet date is October 16th, Frank Cochran Center in Meridan.

DuckyDan, several members are active with the Boy Scouts and it looks as though we're going to help with the Jamboree, have duck calling seminar, buy some clay birds and shells, maybe build a few duck boxes there, buy and give away some duck calls, etc.
I'm heading out for an afternoon of unpleasantries at the dentist. I'll get back to ya later.

The chapter will actually be in Fulton, which is only about a little over an hour from Starkvegas. You're more than welcome to get in on the bandwagon with us up there. I'd like to get one started in Starkville, but I'd prefer some of the "local" guys set it up since I may be moving from here in December. There's some Mississippi State graduates that have gone on to do research and work for them. I think a MSU chapter would go over quite well. If you think we could get something started down here, I'll help out, but I don't want to take on the task of getting two started at once!

I like the Boy Scouts idea! That would even be a great Eagle project for a kid.....building wood duck boxes funded by the local chapter! We used to have a ball growing up in scouts. That skeet shoot is a wonderful idea. You could even try to get the kids to make their own duck calls for their woodwork merit badge. I'm liking these ideas. Keep them coming!!! They could make custom lanyards for their leatherwork merit badge as well! Heck, if the lanyards look good, maybe that could be something for the silent auction!

How close are Fulton, West Point, and Starkville?
That's one thing I don't want to see Delta do; start a bunch of chapters in the same area. Not trying to bash DU, but that's a problem. There's the hinds county, the greater jackson, the madison, the canton, the s. Jackson and several others within 20 miles of each other. They wonder why turnout is down. A "local" chapter in the general area y'all are talking about would be better in my opinion. Combine resources rather than try to outdo your sister committe that's down the street. I would love to see Jackson, Madison and the Res chapter to get together; it'd be a heck of a banquet.
I'm on the Jackson Delta committe, I believe our official name is gonna be the central Ms. Chapter; a central location for everyone to come.

Starkville isn't but about 15 miles or so from West Point. Fulton is a little over 60 miles North of Starkville on Hwy. 25. Starkville could put together a good chapter!
Our representative from Delta told us that they weren't going to do like the other organization and have 10 banquets in every little community known to man. He was actually a little unsure about putting one in Fulton and one in Tupelo (only about 20-25 minutes away). We have a good supporting group of duckers here to be such a small county though.
Our official name is going to be the Tenn Tom Chapter. We're right on the waterway up here, so we thought it fit.

Bourbon> we just met the other night for the first time with the DW representative to elect officers and get the groundwork laid for a new chapter. Some of the guys from down around Jackson or Meridian who have already been through a whole cycle with DW might can help you some more.
DW really emphasizes a family atmosphere with their banquet as well as the program in general. They want to keep the banquets a little more "calm" than maybe some of the others we've heard about. They encouraged us to promote it as a family event and offer a "couples" ticket and to invite kids as well.

ScottS> I don't know if west point and starkville could combine. the two are awfully big not to have a separate one. i know the student base at mississippi state could support one almost by itself, but is there is going to be a starkville chapter it should include the residents there as well.

I am in the process of trying to get a Greenwood-Grenada Chapter of Delta Waterfowl started. It has been harder than I thought it would be because of the popularity of DU in the Greenwood area. It think Greenville is in the proceess of forming a chapter. I thought that the Mississippi delta would be an easy place to get Delta Waterfowl chapters started, but it has been a hard sell so far. Anyone interested in starting a Greenwood-Grenada Chapter please email me at mark123@bellsouth.net or PM me at my Don Miller account. Thanks, Mark Blake"aka"Don Miller
