Old Duck Band

Postby nripres » Sun Jan 13, 2008 7:32 pm

I shot a banded Greenhead this morning and reported it online when I got home. It was banded in Saskatchewan August 24, 1992. 16 Years old. Any one ever killed anyone older? Just curious. The bird was in great shape except for the #6 Hevishot holes in him.

She said the oldest she has recorded was 23 years old , but said they have one on record that was 27  i cant believe it but i guess thats why they keep the records ..........congrats on your band .

According to the Bird Banding Lab’s (BBL) longevity records on the web, a 30-year old bird isn’t that much of a stretch. There is a 22-year and three month old pintail, a 22-year and six month old wood duck, and a Common Eider and Redhead, both 22-years and seven months old. The stats also show a 22 ½-year old Ross’ goose, a 23-year old Steller’s Eider, a blue-winged teal that was 23 ¼ years old, and Lesser Snow (blue) and Greater White-Fronted geese, both 25 ½ years old. BBL records show a 26-year and four month old mallard, a black duck of 26-years and five months, a 27 ½-year old Lesser Snow (white), a 28 ½-year old Black Brant, and a 29 ½-year old canvasback. The oldest bird reported on the BBL site is a 30-year and four month old Canada Goose

They killed a mallard hen a couple of years ago at Morgan City that was 29 and four months.

Congrats on your band!

Sapp's duck missed the record by two months.

Imagine the spreads, skyscrapers and migrations those birds have seen.

I saw a couple of older greenheads at a rest stop on I-55 south of New Madrid, MO a few weeks ago buying lotto tickets and playing dominos.
