Double bands have been around for quite some time. One band is silver the other is green. When shot you call it in like any other band and report the numbers. Wait about 6 months and the gov't sends you a check.

I shot one 2 years ago around Merigold for $100.00. I never knew they went that high but someone once told me there are $1000.00 ones flying around. I think the majority are for $25.00 or $50.00.

The lady I spoke to two years ago indicated they do it every year? Just some years more than others.

I'm ready to pay them for a band. We've taken one banded goose but no banded ducks.

RL don't feel bad. I have been duck hunting for 14 years and have killed my fair share of ducks, but still haven't killed a banded duck.

Two years ago I let a guy with us who was having a bad shooting day kill a duck when it was my shot. Guess what--it was banded.

Three years ago I took a guy on his first duck hunt and he killed two ducks. One was a pintail and the other was a banded mallard with a $100 reward band. I'm sitting there with 4 mallards, one wigeon, and a wood duck(all drakes) marveling at his beginners luck. That was the first pintail I had ever seen in that ole swamp in the hills.

Guess I'll never see one in it again because it has been over run with new duck hunters that hunt it 3-4 times a week. Thats a big no-no in the hills.

Ten'll get you 20, the IRS says that reward money is taxable income!

Another reason for more "newbies" to jump on the duck hunting bandwagon. Hope people don't start trying to shoot ducks for the wrong reason.
wait...wait....NOW!!!!!!!!

The banding effort is to put a $100 reward band on every third adult drake mallard banded. They are using the reward band data to measure the effectiveness of the 1-800 number for reporting if I'm not mistaken. Been lucky with regular bands. As for reward bands, have put them on but not yet taken one off!

I would like to come across a few bands myself this year. I do not know if this info is totally accurate but a couple of years ago when they were begining to push snow goose hunting really hard. I heard talk of a $1 million dollar band on an ole snow. I would not mind filling out the IRS' 1099 Form for that one....... The best I understood it, this band was a one time deal and had to be claimed that same year...

Double R is close. They put reward bands on mallards currently to estimate the true reporting rate. See in the old days when you mailed in your band returns they did "reward band" studies to determine the proportion of those bands recovered knowing that they all should be mailed in since the meant $100 for the hunter. So reporting rates were estimated from that. The 1-800 bands were put on birds earlier than anticipated (there wasn't time for most of the birds with the non-1-800 bands to die), and thus everyone started using the 1-800 number to call in all bands (old and new). Since it is so much easier to pick up the phone than mail a return in, reporting rates have changed. Thus, the reward band study is necessary to estimate reporting rates and thus direct recovery rates with the new "phone in" system. I think it's great, though I wish I had the opportunity to call them more often!

my buddy killed a $100 banded duck last year. As for the snow goose reward band it was just a rumor started to get people to hunt snow geese.
