Prayers needed

Postby bigbear » Mon Sep 09, 2002 8:33 pm

I know this is a little late, but it has been very touch and go. A good friend of mine that I went to nursing school with was in a freak tractor accident the Sunday before Labor Day. He was bushhogging when the mower caught a vine and pulled a tree down and hit him in the head right behind his right eye. The blow knocked him off of the tractor and he hit the left side of his head on the ground. He is in the Neuro Science Intensive Care Unit at UMC. He is still on life support, but is slowly improving. The doctors at UMC are doing all they can, but they don't know what condition he will be in when he does finally come off the ventilator. We know for sure that he will lose his right eye. He had pneumonia last week, but seems to have fought that off with the help of some strong antibiotics. He is now being weened off of the paralytic drugs that have kept him motionless for the last week. He is starting to move some, and looks alot better.

He has a wife and a 17 month old little girl. Your prayers are requested for him and his family during this stressful recovery period. We are trying to raise money for his bills and recovery expenses. I will let you know updates as I get them. Keep him in your prayers.

Big Bear I am glad you posted this up. Several people from my church here in V'burg know him and we have him on our prayer list also. Also, there are several donations going around for him. His name is Steve isn't it big bear (cant remember), but one of the donation spots here in V'burg is River Hills Bank. I heard that some nurses in the Jackson area also started a donation raffle for him too. Big Bear probablly knows more about that than me. As Big Bear stated he and his family needs all the prayers and support they can recieve.

My prayers and thoughts go to him and his family!! I know that the prayers and thoughts that came from this board helped my brother while he was neuro-science ICU! Let us know if there is more we can do!!
I love to watch the ducks circle and the dogs work.

Actually his name is Gary. He works in Vicksburg in the ER. Yes, we are trying to get a gun or a couple of guns to raffle off. As much as alot of people talk bad about the owner of the Mean Mallard, he has been very helpful with the gun raffle situation. Nothing is final, but he definately has my respect for the way he has responded to this tragedy. Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers. They are doing surgery this morning on his bad eye.

BigBear may we all have great friends like you. And like someone already stated ..this is a powerful place for prayers...I personally know its true. Keep us posted on the surgery and recovery of the young man. His family is going thru an awful time as well. We should all pray for them too. They will be in my prayers.

prayers

Postby bigbear » Wed Sep 11, 2002 2:32 pm

Well, they started to wean Gary of the sedation today. So far he is doing well. Still on the ventilator, but starting to move around a little more. They did take his eye yesterday and that surgery went well. I got to go in and see him yesterday at 5pm and he looked alot better than I thought he would. Keep the prayers coming, and thanks to those of you who have already sent their prayers and well wishings.
On another note. I know there are some people in here who don't really care for Jeff Speed at the Mean Mallard, but he came through today. I approached him Monday about helping us out on a gun to raffle to help raise money for Gary's bills and what not. He told me to get back with him Tuesday or Wednesday. I went back today to talk to him about it and he GAVE me a 870 express super mag! I couldn't believe that he just outright gave it to me. He didn't even ask for advertising or anything. He may not have asked for thanks and advertising, but you had better believe that is what he will get, lots of thanks and mean mallard will be on the raffle tickets!!Even though he doesn't know Gary or anyone in his family, he gave something that he knows will help his cause. That is the sign of a good man. Someone who will give of himself without expecting anything in return. I don't care if there are some things about the store that irritate me, from now on Jeff has got my business and my friendship.

Thanks,
Michael

Several thoughts:

One reason Speed might not want any pub is that I'll bet you good money he gets approached for tons of donations...DU, NWTF,NRA banquets, etc plus charity golf tourneys and all sorts of other things I'm sure...

Speed is goofy but he is a good fella and he is a very shrewd businessman in his area...I would not give him a dime to invest in anything else but in hunting/fishing retail he is a frigging genius...

Regarding Gary's tragedy, I can think of no better cause to donate a gun to so I am glad to hear that Jeff came through...I'll look for the details of the raffle soon...If I win the gun, I'll donate it back for further fund-raising...

Got another prayer request for yall: I dont know this family but a friend told me that his buddy's wife died on Sunday in a 4 wheeler accident when the bike she was riding on with her husband flipped over on a creek bank and crushed her, living the husband to deal with his grief and raise two small children without a mama...Breaks my heart...

Dont know if yall noticed but there are a lot of young men- in their 20s and 30s- in wheelchairs around MS...Many of them from 4 wheeler and treestand accidents...I use mine 100+ days per year, but 4 wheelers are down right dangerous because they WILL do many things they are not MEANT to do...Please, please be careful on your 4 wheelers...

Likewise, treestands have revolutionized deer hunting...I use mine a lot but no matter who careful you are, stuff happens...Simply using your safety belt AS YOU CLIMB THE TREE, WHILE HUNTING AND WHEN COMING DOWN THE TREE, insures that even if you fall, you will not get hurt...

Something to think about as we head into hunting season (as opposed to dove shooting season).
