Worms in Ducks?

A friend of mine brought in 3 duscks last weekend that his son had killed on the youth weekend from Lake Millwood (AR) I saw them laying in his boat the next morning and noticed he hadnt cleaned them. Asked him what the deal was and he said they were full of worms. I looked where he had pulled the feathers/skin back on the and I saw what he was talking about. These were short, maybe 1/4 inch long at most and on the hen mallard, there was not a place 3/8 of an inch of her breasts that didnt have one of these worms in it. The look similar to worms you see in bass sometimes when they have been in hot shallow water, thats the best example I can give. All three ducks (1 greenhead, 1 hen, 1 teal) had these worms in them. Has anyone else seen any of thing like this? I used to hunt up until a few years ago and I never saw anything like it. I wish I would have thought to at least take some pics of it. Thanks....Marty

I bet SB can tell us exactly what it is. I don't think its too uncommon. I have occasionally taken wormy ducks.

We killed a Suzie with the disease the first weekend. As much as I hated to disgard the duck, I personally do not feel comfortable eating one that looks to be unhealthy. To each his own.

Absolutely no worries with rice breast. When the ducks get down here in the marsh, they almost all have it. I bet I have eaten hundreds of ducks with rice breast and I am still here to tell about it. Of course that may expalin a lot. Definetly don't waste the duck because of it, it is good eating stuff with or without the worms.

Do ducks still look wormy after you cook them? I think it would hard to get past that wormy look on the plate unless of course I was really hungry. And I'm not.

I hate to waste a duck. I would guess I got $100 dollars in each one I kill

Thanks for the info and the links. I HATE wasting game but I dont think I could eat the meat either, heck, I didnt even want to touch it!! I will pass the info onto my buddy when I see him again.

I am also a Cubs Fan and a duck hunter. I feel your pain.

On a brighter note, a guy I know out here in CA, his son won a duck hunt with Dusty Baker. Evidently Dusty is a huge waterfowler, belongs to a private club in the San Juoquin River Delta in NorCal.

I killed a suzie last weekend with "rice breast". I hated it but I had to throw her away. They say not to let your dog eat any of the meat cause they could get the parasite? Have any of you heard this too?
