Barrel Length

Postby greyduk » Mon Jan 17, 2005 9:43 am

Traditionally wingshooting barrels have been of a shorter length as they are quicker to the target. Until the last 20 years the shortest barrels for wingshooting were 26 in. As in most things there is no single right answer as to which barrel is best. There are some points for each.

If you hunt in a pit or close quarters a 21 or 23 will ring the guy's ears next to you pretty good. Most target shooters these days use 28 in. Autos or 30 in. O/U's because of the longer sight picture and the fact that a longer barrel is more stable because it is more muzzle heavy. A 30 in. auto is eqivalent in length to a 32 in. O/U which gets to be a bit long in situations where for instance you need to swing on an exploding bunch of teal.

At any rate most people have settled for "Duck" guns in the 26 or 28 in. size. Hope that helps.

For what it is worth, most everyone I see at clay shoots anymore will have a 30" auto, or a 32" or 34" OU. If you ask me, 34" O/U's are past the point of diminishing returns for most people. I much prefer the 30" auto, even though you only have one choke option for split pair targets.

Do your hunting buddies a favor and stay away from anything less than 26".

Just a word of advice from someone who has buddy that shoots a 24" barrel.

Easier to point a long stick accurately than a short stick...I don't own anything shorter than 28"....

EVERYONE knows longer is better...
Sometimes you just have to close your eyes, count to ten, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you wouldn't look good in prison stripes... and just smile at that dumbass and walk away.

For dove hunting i use a 22" barrel on a B-80.....that thing will smoke a dove or quail....i use a modified choke in it....it is a heavy gun anyway so i guess you still get the swing effect

for ducks a 26" barrel on the benelli

Auto guns a 26" or 24", Over/unders I like a 28 or 30 being that you dont have the action for the extra length. A 24" auto is about the same as a 30 inch over/under.
Somebody shoot!!

If you want to hit more birds, try a 30" auto for several weeks with an open mind. I dare you......
