DuBose hired as Millsaps assistant

The Clarion-Ledger

Former Alabama football coach Mike DuBose is the new defensive coordinator at Millsaps College.

"We basically went for the long ball and we nailed it," said Millsaps coach David Saunders. "... I do think this is a neat story. I think it's going to have people following our program this fall who normally would not."

Millsaps is an NCAA Division III program that does not award athletic scholarships. The Majors went 4-5 in 2004, Saunders' second season as coach.

DuBose was a popular assistant at Bama but endured a tumultuous tenure as head coach, posting a 24-23 record from 1997-2000. He survived a sexual harassment lawsuit and admitted having an affair with his secretary but couldn't survive losing. DuBose resigned after the Tide went 3-8 in 2000.

Saunders said DuBose will start at Millsaps in June, after completing the schoolyear at Luverne (Ala.) High School.

DuBose, 52, will have 25 years in the Alabama state system and be eligible for full retirement benefits.

DuBose told the Montgomery Advertiser it was a difficult decision to leave Luverne, which he led to a 20-7 record over the last two years.

"We've talked about it and prayed about it," DuBose said. "My wife and I looked at the possibility of staying at Luverne on a part-time basis. We tried to make some financial sense out of it. It didn't work."

Saunders, a former Ole Miss recruiting coordinator, said he talked to DuBose "about putting a mark on Division III football and winning championships. That's what got him interested in being a part of this."

I was at Millsaps for four years and I think I went to five football games. Maybe this will generate some interest in the program beyond the folks that want to come out and look at the pretty new turf.
Wonder what kind of trouble DuBose will get into in ol' Jacktown.

Well, well, well, here we have some of the Crim$on Tide's finest coming over to help poor ol' Mississippi out once again. Thanks Alabama!

Webbmaster, tell us what UA Head Coach Mike Dubose can do for the program at Millsaps. Hopefully, he can get Joe Willie (I want to kiss you!) to come over for a pregame speech. If Millsaps is lucky Namath can do sideline reports...uuuuh, do they even have a radio broadcast??

Anyway, it's a nice thing for one of the many great products of the storied Bama program to do for lowly MS 8)

Yes, Millsaps plays football occasionally. But nobody really notices. This is my second year at Ole Miss, a consistent top ten placer in party schools. I'm here to tell you, it's not near as crazy here as it gets on the weekends behind the gates on State Street.

The only game anybody really gets up for is the "Backyard Brawl" every year with Mississippi College. This game was such a bitter rivalry for a while with fans fighting and such, that they cancelled the game for a long time. Started back up my sophomore year and it was considerably toned down, but still lotsa fun. The Chocs hated that all the Millsaps kids would be drunk and screaming while they had to be sure to make it back for curfew.

But I'm glad to see it's a beginning of a new era for the Majors!!!

Pondman,
I graduated in 2003, so I missed you by a bit. I always figured I was the only Millsaps guy on the board. What did you major in?
Maybe when can get some D-III trash talk going.

Maybe Millsaps could get ol Kenny "Snake" Stabler to be the offensive coordinator --- that would be pretty cool. Dubose handling the D, Stabler handling the O, and Joe Wille patroling the sidelines for comic relief.

Hell, if that happened, I would go to Millsaps games instead of UM games ----- that would be a lot of entertainment value for the buck.

Millsaps is a great school. My little sister graduated from there in approximately '98-99', then went to law school in God's Country. :D

Mudsucker, I was talking about the OTHER God's Country ----- OXFORD, MS ---- land of beautiful women, more bars per capita than any other place in the South, good music, great food, lots of artsy fartsy stuff to do, home of the prettiest college campus in the US, and one of the best college football gameday atmospheres in the country . :D But, I would concede that LA is another God's Country, when you factor in the great hunting, fishing, and coolest large city, New Orleans. 8)

Mottlet,

I graduated in organismal biology. Then went to God's country (Starkville). I think the Dubose hire is a good thing. Just don't leave him alone with any of the sectretaries or the players.

Were you in a fraternity while you were there?

Now, Pondman is on the right track...how can any person in their right mind refer to Oxfart as God's Country. That is just plain ridiculous.

Lambda Chi Alpha.

Hell, turn him loose on the secretaries. I know that the ones in the business office and financial aid office always needed a little something to get em to chill.

that's easy, the same reason it's called Starkghanistan... along with hell it's the second place in the Bible that God turned his back on... and thirdly starkghanistan is the place that fun forgot.....etc etc etc, so see, Oxford clearly is God's country...... if you need further proof...... go watch a clip of the "Immaculate Rejection", and then tell me God's not from Oxford, or at least a big Ole Miss fan ;)
