DuBose hired as Millsaps assistant
The Clarion-Ledger
Former Alabama football coach Mike DuBose is the new defensive coordinator at Millsaps College.
"We basically went for the long ball and we nailed it," said Millsaps coach David Saunders. "... I do think this is a neat story. I think it's going to have people following our program this fall who normally would not."
Millsaps is an NCAA Division III program that does not award athletic scholarships. The Majors went 4-5 in 2004, Saunders' second season as coach.
DuBose was a popular assistant at Bama but endured a tumultuous tenure as head coach, posting a 24-23 record from 1997-2000. He survived a sexual harassment lawsuit and admitted having an affair with his secretary but couldn't survive losing. DuBose resigned after the Tide went 3-8 in 2000.
Saunders said DuBose will start at Millsaps in June, after completing the schoolyear at Luverne (Ala.) High School.
DuBose, 52, will have 25 years in the Alabama state system and be eligible for full retirement benefits.
DuBose told the Montgomery Advertiser it was a difficult decision to leave Luverne, which he led to a 20-7 record over the last two years.
"We've talked about it and prayed about it," DuBose said. "My wife and I looked at the possibility of staying at Luverne on a part-time basis. We tried to make some financial sense out of it. It didn't work."
Saunders, a former Ole Miss recruiting coordinator, said he talked to DuBose "about putting a mark on Division III football and winning championships. That's what got him interested in being a part of this."
I was at Millsaps for four years and I think I went to five football games. Maybe this will generate some interest in the program beyond the folks that want to come out and look at the pretty new turf.
Wonder what kind of trouble DuBose will get into in ol' Jacktown.
