Moist soil plant quiz

If you win you get to dove hunt Saturday. Don't cheat by looking at the file name for the pic.

All of these are growing in the same spot. It was disked and planted in rice last year. Water left to dry up on its own this year but most all water was gone by mid June. They are all "duck friendly", some being better seed producers than others. They are all "early successional" species, meaning they do best the first 2-3 years after soil disturbance like disking and then start to dwindle away or produce drastically fewer pounds of seed per acre as they are replaced by species that are not as favored by waterfowl.

The first five are in the grass family.

First three are practically blood kin. First two are natural and the same genus and species, but the variety is different. The third is a volunteer plant from last year's planting. They all 3 like it damp to wet and can grow in standing water.

B.

C.

These two tend to like drier sites, or when water is drawn down later in the year. They will sometimes come up after A-C above have matured and died.

D.

E.

The next 3 are broadleaves.

F.

G.

And this one is neither a grass or a broadleaf. It has reddish roots.

But the red head gives it away, if you've ever seen it.

G. Palmer Amaranth

If any wild game enjoys this weed I'd be set. As it sits I despise this weed.

You're right about the crab grass. And the pigweed is pretty obvious now. Everyone is entitled to a brain fart every now and then. And I don't get too specific on my millets. If it ain't barnyard it's "jungle rice"

Ok I think I'm wrong on b but I don't think it's jungle rice. It may be rough barnyard (muricata) ?

And I thought the other was toothcup but I think you're right about beggarticks. My brain fart.

And the pigweed does look like a ragweed head.

Look at the "F", it appears to be a old floret at the base of the node. If so, I will say it is tooth cup. Also biden will have compound leaves(fern like) that are opposite on the stem with dark green venation(like high lighted with dark green sharpie) at the base of the leaf. Would be interesting if you could pull entire sample from roots up and photo.

Okay, this is definitely toothcup. Found it in another impoundment:

And this is "F" in the first post. Definitely not toothcup.

You sir are right, on the toothcup. Almost looks like alligator weed. But have not seen much of that since I have been around the Delta. Interesting. Was it a single erect plant or clumpy mat? Will look at again when I get better resolution on PC at home.

Could that plant in the last pic be tea weed?

We have tons of toothcup where I am. It turns brown relatively earlier than the other grasses.

And pigweed is definitely eaten by ducks. Find a lot of it in gadwall and teal. They like those small seeds. Browsed a lot by deer too.

Not teaweed. I have tons of that in my dove field. I don't know what it is.
