I'm sure Wingman is exaggerating knowing his love of moonpies, but snipe do eat very well. You'd be hard pressed to tell them apart from a dove when you wrap their breasts in bacon. Tough to cook them any other way since they are so small. You could do them over rice with gravy as well.

Bacon, cheese, jalapeno. They are up there with dove and teal in my book. I cooked two limits of them last year for our wild game supper.

WARNING: Before you try snipe hunting make sure you can tell the difference between a lesser yellowlegs and a snipe in the air. They look very very similar to one another especially at the speeds they fly. The GW told the guys at the club that the only way he could tell them apart was the noise they made. Snipe = good eats, Lesser Yellow Legs = Big A** ticket. Just something to look in too...

I'm pretty sure he said the best way to tell was by sound. You can tell them apart by sight if you know what you're looking at. But cloudy days late in the evening are tough conditions to begin with.

Yeah, apparently the lesser yellowlegs whistles and I’m not sure what sound a snipe makes. I was just glad I didn’t go with them that afternoon b/c I probably would have killed any long beaked bird that flew by. We did have a good time making fun of the great “snipe hunters” when they got back to the camp though.

And you forgot to mention the teal "mistaken" for snipe and shot with lead.

I made some decoys similiar to the ones in a past article you wrote after getting tired of seeing no ducks. I will be putting a hurting on them this Feb. I let them soak in brine for about a week and maaaaan you talk about good. I got to where I'd put em in with some veggies and asian stir-fry. Tender as can be, and to me at least, seem to have much whiter meat than doves or other game birds.

Yeah that was news to me as well, but you can shoot lead at snipe. Personally, it doesn't matter what I'm hunting during waterfowl season if it flys I'm shooting steal.

I wasn't there out there, but from what I was told the two guys that shot the teal were told not to shoot and shot anyway when the teal flew over. They are not members of the club and will not be back. I was at the camp when they got back to the camp and honestly if I were that GW I would have not been able to put up with the mouth on one of those guys.

Reminds me of a story about a sheriff here back in the 60's. Out in a rural area taking a call and a guy was giving the sheriff lip. A wrastlin' match ensued and the sheriff came out from it hammer back, cocked locked and ready to rock. The sheriff's deputy told him " Cecil don't chee kill that boy", so he shot him in the gut.

Moral of the story is, keep your mouth shut if you don't want wingman or others to gut shoot chee on a rice levee.

Only waterfowl, coots and cranes must be shot with non-toxic. Of course Federal lands and WMA's are different.

In all seriousness, the fellow I talked to said other than a good butt chewing wingman was nothin but fair. There must be SOME law somewhere that makes it illegal for Homer to even say, "shorebird".
