don't remember '73, but remember 97 which was the highest mark on the Helena guage in recent yrs. Suppose to surpass that by 3 ft at 51.5. Sho' ain't looking good for anybody behind the hill now. More rain coming too.

The flooding up north is supposed to be worse than '97 when the red river put Grand Forks, ND under water. The whole city looked like Katrina. Plus Winnipeg in Manitoba will be half under water again too.

The only upside was outstanding duck production since EVERY low spot in the prairies had water.

Sitting at the office in Memphis and its raining like a sumbitch now, and i think carrying that up through the Valley. I would look for the stage to go higher as a result

Just what I was thinking. We are just catching the southern portion of the big system too. It's mostly north in the midwest.

I may be wrong, but I swear I remember hearing that there were some discrepancies in the river guages between now and then. Making the numbers a little skewed(not sure in which direction). I do know that the levees are higher now than what they used to be. Anybody got any input on it?

I sure hate it for the people that hunt back there. There have been multiple high water years here recently and I know its having effects on the hunting back there.

The only information I could find was that the river stage was at 46.8 feet in Greenville when the levee broke. Remember that the levees were not nearly as large then as they are now.

After the 1927 flood came the 1928 Flood Control Act. The modern day system which is 98% complete, is made up of more than just levees (flood control lakes,cutoffs,spillways, etc.) The levees are wider and taller than in 27.
Some river gages have been adjusted/moved over the years for various reasons, and all storm events have their own hydraulic slopes. Thats why you will NEVER get the same reading throughout the lower Mississippi River valley.
From the river data i have and looking at proposed crest this storm (From Memphis gage to Helena) is bumping right around a 50 yr event, give or take a foot. I was just informed by Vicksburg District that the NWS will bump it again with the next 24 hrs based on what is on the ground + todays storms. It will be adjusted 1 to 3 ft up and the crest date will be run out 3 to 5 additional days. There is only about 2.5 to 3 ft difference in the 50 and 100 yr stage (depending on location).
For general info- the Mississippi River Levees provide 500 yr protection plus 5 to 7 feet of freeboard (depending on location).
My 2 cents: There is still a little time to move some items from the batture so if you can..........hurry.

We've been on the phone with Vicksburg as well, looks like it will be bumped to 53 at Vicksburg and the crest will be pushed back a little bit. That covers projected rainfall through Thursday, the crest/date will be updated as actual rainfall data is incorporated.

If your on the unprotected side of the River from Satartia to Yazoo City (Panther Swamp - Wolf Lake) better get ready. Projected crest there is 102-103, it hit 100 in 2008. Hwy 49 just north of the river bridge is about 106.9 to give you a point of reference. Its fixin to get serious down there...

All of the folks who will be flooded are in my wife's and my thoughts and prayers. We were flooded in the May 1-2 flooding last year in Franklin, TN, and I can tell you flooding is not any fun. My stomach is in knots today as I watch the storms coming into our area and see the flood warnings that are showing things may get back once again.
