I'm almost a 100% certain it's an overcup. It's been a long time since FFA and 4H nationals, but I really believe you have an overcup.

It's definitely not a nuttall or post oak. Our forestry teacher always told us the overcup threw folks off thinking it was a post oak because of the "cross" pattern at the top. Also shade leaves and leaves in the sun are two totally different looking things.

Have we decided it is an oak tree?

Don't think it has been determined if it's a white or a red oak yet...
Maybe we need a Stihl and cut it down asnd see if the wood is red or white...(favorite technigue of DS "pseudo forresters")...
Guy posted once that he had a pine tree with holes/possible bug infestation...half a dozen on here said cut it down! He later found a retired forrester that said they were peckerwood holes and the tree would prolly out live him...

So much for "Ask DS"
Later DL

I change my vote and agree with greenheadgrimreaper. It's not a post oak. That was a while ago on my original post so I'm not sure what I was thinking. I've moved since then and have an overcup in my front yard and it has leaves like both in the picture. My dendro is usually pretty good but I just had a brain fart on this one.
