I wish I could see an acorn...but...I'm almost sure it's a nuttall....

I'm almost a 100% certain it's an overcup. It's been a long time since FFA and 4H nationals, but I really believe you have an overcup.

It's definitely not a nuttall or post oak. Our forestry teacher always told us the overcup threw folks off thinking it was a post oak because of the "cross" pattern at the top. Also shade leaves and leaves in the sun are two totally different looking things.

Don't think it has been determined if it's a white or a red oak yet...
Maybe we need a Stihl and cut it down asnd see if the wood is red or white...(favorite technigue of DS "pseudo forresters")...

Guy posted once that he had a pine tree with holes/possible bug infestation...half a dozen on here said cut it down! He later found a retired forrester that said they were peckerwood holes and the tree would prolly out live him... So much for "Ask DS"

Overcup I tell you!

Once again, i am going with RR's call on this one (Delta Post Oak -Quercus Similis).

Its a Post Oak. Period.

Well I am a Dendrologist.

The lobes are not right for a post oak. If it were early in the season, maybe. But I am assuming these were taken in the fall. Fully mature, no way it is a post oak. Even the shade leaves would be fully formed to give the "cross" appearance. I will say the bark looks more post oak than overcup, but not enough to discredit overcup. Tree bark can be decieving. Post oak leaves are more rounded and larger than overcup. Unless Wingman has tiny midget hands it looks to be a small-medium size leaf. Also it appears to be too thin of a leaf to be a post oak. Post oak leaves are big and thick and chunky looking. Kind of how I like my women.

And finally you have to look at the habitat. I am assuming with it being in the delta and on Wingman's land, it is in a bottomland area. Post oak grows in dry sandy soils, with the exception of delta post oak. And even then it better be on a ridge and in an area that still drains relatively well. Overcup oaks thrive in bottomland, alluvial type soils. Heavy clay and poorly drained areas make conditions even better. It may be a delta post oak, but I doubt it. It is definitely NOT a post oak.

I change my vote and agree with greenheadgrimreaper. It's not a post oak. That was a while ago on my original post so I'm not sure what I was thinking. I've moved since then and have an overcup in my front yard and it has leaves like both in the picture. My dendro is usually pretty good but I just had a brain fart on this one.

I'm going with overcup oak too.
