Oak

Postby Wingman » Tue Oct 19, 2010 2:47 pm

Another installment in my "what's that tree series." :D

Some type of white oak I presume. Leaves and trunk from same tree. Post oak??

An acorn would really help to ID it. It's got mighty deep lobes to be a white oak, but I don't see any bristle tips on the lobes to indicate a red oak either. Without acorns I'm going to guess you've got a cherrybark oak there.

I really think it's a post oak. No bristle tips on any of the leaves. The true white oak and the bur oak both are deeply lobed white oaks.

I is confused. I agree that the leaf looks like a true white oak, but the bark looks like a cherrybark. I'm changing my guess to a white cherrybark oak. :D

I think this would be a good time to devuldge that I was a gnat's eyelash away from failing dendrology

You are right, the bark does look like cherrybark. But the leaves are throwing me off.

Why are the leaves throwing you off...i.e. red oak leaves have pointed lobes and white oaks have rounded lobes, rule of thumb, right?... Is the light bark making you try to call it a white oak. Ain't the bark lighter and the lobes pointed, characteristic of the cherrybark. The lobes are indeed pointed, huh? My feable $.02.
Glad some informative posts around for a change. Thanks. I've lern't more on this stuff lately cuz of you Wing.... Now if Bigwater would chime in we'd get the "scitific" side of the story, or at least the "tore up" version. That'd cover it all... Lernin and funnin...

Oh, for you yungins. I'm 61 and didn't put down roots til '85 and I started planting trees all around. Main reason was to shade the grass cuz my spare time ain't for cuttin grass! Only 2 lil spots of grass left in my back yard now from all the shade that I created. Some I planted from acorns but most from 1/2" bare root stuff. My point is plant some trees and 15-20 yrs you'd be amazed! That is all...

Curious... yard tree or in tha wild. If in tha wild it surely couldn't be in your county!! You know theres no law or soil good enough to grow a cherrybark in Humphreys!

What does the back side of the leaf look like? A cherrybark will have a slick top and a leathery/hairy looking underside. Insert funny joke here!_______________________________

What I'm saying is is that the bark looks like the cherrybark I see in pictures, but the leaves don't. The leaves have no bristles on the ends of the lobes, which makes me think it isn't a red oak at all. There are a few white oaks that have deeply lobed leaves, and I've pretty much ruled out the true white oak and the bur oak. That leaves the post oak.

Bill, I know if there are cherrybarks in this cutover it would be a sign of the end of the world, but I did find not one, but 3 walnut trees in Humphreys county lately. Picked up a bucket full of walnuts yesterday afternoon. Been driving by that big old tree for 3 years and never knew it was a walnut. It is on Dubbs very fine sandy loam at Sky Lake WMA. Yes, very fine sandy loam in Humphreys Co! Some of the finest cotton ground in the county planted to bottomland hardwoods by the Corps.

If my memory serves me correctly from the good ol' high school FFA then I'll agree with Wingman, post oak. Definately NOT a red oak of any sort, PERIOD.

Almost looks like 2 different species of leaves to me. The one on the right I would say is a post oak and the one on the left a cherrybark oak. They just don't look like the same tree species to me...very small differences though.

I know. That's why I showed both.

Would everyone please come for the tree viewing this Saturday?

Edit: see 3rd pic from same tree above.

Context is everything and without standing on-site, it can be tough call but assuming you're within a few miles of your home in the Delta I'd default ID immediately as overcup oak (Q lyrata), and back up guess is delta post oak (Q similis). excat location and tree species-association or matured fruit biggest determining factors to me.

Leaves are tough, even with bark example sometimes. Here's a quick example why...
