The history of beer on the whole is quite interesting. Dating back to the Egyptians honey mead to the Belgian and German Monks and their ales, whit, and boch styles, the mother country and her majesties India Pale Ale styles to the prohibition era which killed much of the regional aspects of this country's beer makers for a LONG time, you would be hard pressed to find anything that's had as much influence over mankind as...........BEER.

In fact, depending on availability of ingredients, what makes up the water, and good ole fashioned economics, each country, region, heck, each town can have it's own "style" of beer.

To say a favorite kind??? Well, I don't know if it's possible. Frankly, you folks are leaving a lot to be desired. It really depends on what you're looking for in a beer. If you want a 'big' beer with an ultra-high alcohol content laced with hops which needs to be fermented for years in order to allow it to mellow enough to be drinkable, your "style" such as it is would probably be a barley-wine. Sipping beer to be sure. Personally, I've only had a handful of BW's in my time as a beer drinker and although I like them a good bit on a cold night, I wouldn't want to make a habit out of drinking them. My preferences for a good barley wine are STONE BREWING COMPANY'S - OLD GUARDIAN and SIERRA NEVADA'S - BIGFOOT BARLEY-WINE. Again, BIG, BITTER, with a hint of sweetness in the aftertaste.

What about ales??? Strong, old, I.P.A's, A.P.A's, brown ales, nut ales, etc etc.....the list is LONG my friends, and for the home/craft/micro brewer, this is probably where you make your bread and butter from. Ales (particuarly the IPA and APA fashions) are what folks think of when they think "microbrew". The balancing act that the brewers play with the hops between too bitter and just right is truly something to behold. MANY a good brew from this class has already been mentioned, but I might add a few to think about: STONE BREWING'S - ARROGANT "illegitimate child", ROGUE'S - DEAD GUY, BRIDGEPORT'S IPA, SHIPWRECK'S IPA, BRECKENRIDGE'S AVALANCHE ALE, YELLOWSTONES - WILD FLY ALE, BIG SKY'S MOOSE DROOL BROWN, POWDER WINTER ALE, SCAPE GOAT IPA, etc......again, the list is just to much to comprehend on one thread. Personally, I'm an ale guy.....love em, so I'll take one of each please!

Stouts and Porters???? Historically these were the beers of the downtrodden. These were the type beers that Jack the Rippers victims would have drank. When in port, what the sailors and pirates of the day may have taken a swig of (if rum was in short supply). A typical description is heavy, black, w/ a full mouth feel, and possible coffee overtones.......great for breakfast.

And, that's just the beginning. Summer brews, wheats and barley based brews, seasonals, lagers, hefe's, etc etc etc.............................again, the list is LONG my friends.....

So, if a gun was put to my head and someone demanded me to tell them what my favorite beer is, I'd calmly look them right in the eyes, take a sip, and reply - the one I'm drinking RIGHT NOW.

The Indian Summer in the "Pig" from Southern Brewery is great.

My favorite beer description comes from my grand father, a retired Navy MC. He calls beer on tap/draft - loose beer.

I've been trying to get a "pig" of anything Lazy Magnolia, but nobody sells them here - Brewski's claims that noone can get "pigs" because Lazy Magnolia has put a halt to them for now until they can catch up with Souther Pecan bottle orders. Actually the ONLY Lazy Magnolia we can get here is Southern Pecan from retailers, you would think as much as they sell here, they would at least try a couple of other flavors (not complaining, because it is righteous beer, but would like to try a few other flavors). If anyone knows different in the Starkville area, please let me know.

I bought mine at the liquor store in Tupelo a couple of weeks ago. Headed that way shortly. I will let you know if they still some. And I meant Lazy Magnolia....I don't know where I got Southern Brewery.

Please do and let me know which/where store if they have them, it would save some items in my fridge - supposedly they only take up as much room as 2 gallons of milk, where a case of bottles (same as pig volume) takes up almost my entire bottom shelf - granted they don't stay in my fridge long, but the milk has to find a new home in the fridge and that means something else has to go to appease the milk....

Watermelon wheat, and Raspberry Ale brewed by me

Got about 30 bottles of watermelon, and 35 bottles of American wheat at the house right now about to brew a Chocolate stout next week

Goose Island Brewery's Honkers (Honkas if you're a yankee) Ale brewed in Chicago is the best I think I have had yet. Sam Adams Boston Lager is by far my year round go to brew. I do love a Blue Moon during the summer months though.

But like gator the philosopher said there are just too many good ones to pick an absolute favorite. Give me a stocked cooler of all the good brews I've drank and I would stand there for hours debating which one to choose. It just wouldn't be possible.
