Jack is great in all regards, but Jim Ellis is just a baseball kind of guy. He knows the history and refers back to it when similar situations arise. You can usually tell if a hit has enough on it to get out of the park just from his voice...."and there's a drive...deep left field...way back, way back...it is gone". "And here comes...two-two pitch....he struck him out swingin." I have listened to David Kellum while watching games. I enjoy him getting excited even though it is rare if I am pulling for the Rebs. He is a little inconsistent in calling pitches what they are. I especially get tired of him using the description "slurve". I think every Ole Miss pitcher must be a master of this lethal pitch...lol. The LSU guy is very good.

Po Monkey Lounger wrote:Younger Rebs, Jack Cristil is an "acquired taste", like learning to enjoy and appreciate a good beer. You have to pay attention, or you will miss some truly great gems.

The great attention to detail that Jack has made on the air calling football games is really funny to me and entertaining. What other announcer describes the uniforms the teams are wearing, down to the stripes on the socks, stripes on the helmets, etc. Details. Details. After receiving Jack's detailed information about the teams, their players, the uniforms they are wearing, the stadium, wind direction, orientation of the field, the type of playing surface, the location of the bands and students, where the teams entered the stadium, the demeaner of the teams and coaches, etc. etc. , you can start to envision yourself at the game, the smell of BBQ and bourbon in the air ---it all starts coming to life.

Then, during the game, Jack keeps you informed of the score, a summary of the scoring, time left in the game, and down and yardage with enough frequency that if you tuned into the game late, or left and had to come back, you could jump in and catch up quickly. But, more importantly, from an entertainment standpoint, is his dry wit, which especially helps if the Dogs are losing big time. Jack can always find the humor in any situation, albeit it may be a tad sarcastic. You just cannot find this type of announcing anywhere else ---too many homers afraid to offend someone. Jack just does not care. He has earned his ability to be objective. Jack is a throwback to the past ---one who has held on longer than most and still does a good job, especially now that he has Jim to gently remind him of names or make tactful corrections.

Young Rebs, the next time you are waiting on an Ole Miss game to start, or UM is off that Sat. and MSU is playing, crack a top on a cool one and sit back and listen to Jack's call of the game. If you appreciate sports, you will enjoy.

Hmmm......this is looking more like old testament stuff.

I know duckaholic. Your sole purpose in life is to stir the pot whether you agree or disagree. :)
