Jim Ellis and the Diamond Dogs
Getting close to the start of another Spring of Bulldog Baseball and listening to Jim Ellis on the radio. He has got to be one of the best college baseball play by play announcers.
Are we gonna get wet?

Gotta love Jack ------- "The Sonic Drive of the Game will be my drive back to Tupelo" ---classic
Jack throws in some real sarcasm every now and then that is simply priceless. Jim has a good radio voice, knows his stats, etc. etc., but he does not have the personality and dry wit on the air that Jack exhibits ---at least not yet.

Yes, David gets a little excited during the broadcasts.
And, he is a Rebel homer. But, there are worse things and we could do a lot worse than David. I have grown to like him over the years. Familiarity and tradition. Just as with Jack and MSU, David has a distinctive voice and one you associate with Ole Miss when he is on the air. Makes it easier to find the games on the radio.

Yeah, like the game against Vandy where he gave Nichols 4 points for a fg to give UM the lead 24-23.....then you hear Sandroni in the background in a whispering voice....David, were only tied now.

Oh hell no, I know you just didn't do that. Even in his mid 70's Cristil is still the man. Yes, at times he gets some players' names wrong, but what announcer doesn't when they get excited. Kellum will never be able to accomplish what Cristil has done for 50+ years.

Younger Rebs, Jack Cristil is an "acquired taste", like learning to enjoy and appreciate a good beer. You have to pay attention, or you will miss some truly great gems.
The great attention to detail that Jack has made on the air calling football games is really funny to me and entertaining. What other announcer describes the uniforms the teams are wearing, down to the stripes on the socks, stripes on the helmets, etc. Details. Details.
After receiving Jack's detailed information about the teams, their players, the uniforms they are wearing, the stadium, wind direction, orientation of the field, the type of playing surface, the location of the bands and students, where the teams entered the stadium, the demeaner of the teams and coaches, etc. etc. , you can start to envision yourself at the game, the smell of BBQ and bourbon in the air ---it all starts coming to life.
Then, during the game, Jack keeps you informed of the score, a summary of the scoring, time left in the game, and down and yardage with enough frequency that if you tuned into the game late, or left and had to come back, you could jump in and catch up quickly. But, more importantly, from an entertainment standpoint, is his dry wit, which especially helps if the Dogs are losing big time. Jack can always find the humor in any situation, albeit it may be a tad sarcastic. You just cannot find this type of announcing anywhere else ---too many homers afraid to offend someone. Jack just does not care. He has earned his ability to be objective. Jack is a throwback to the past ---one who has held on longer than most and still does a good job, especially now that he has Jim to gently remind him of names or make tactful corrections.
Young Rebs, the next time you are waiting on an Ole Miss game to start, or UM is off that Sat. and MSU is playing, crack a top on a cool one and sit back and listen to Jack's call of the game. If you appreciate sports, you will enjoy.

I'm not a MSU or Bama fan by no means, GEAUX TIGERS, but Jack and Eli are 2 of the best announcers in the business. If LSU and State are playing on tv then I will cut the volume off and listen to the game on the radio and watch the tv and I do the same when LSU plays Bama. I can't stand to hear that bunch from Oxford, to hear them tell it Ole Miss has never lost a game, just ran out of time.
If you can't hunt it with a dog, I don't want to hunt it..........
