Burn---from old English, most likely taken from the archaic German "brunn" meaning "spring of water." You know, it was left behind by those Germanic barbarians (Vikings) who came pillaging and raping through England back when it was "Angleland."

Best guess is that it was a slough or brake named by someone with a family recently from England. There are many places in England and Scotland with the word "burn" or "bern" in the name. Most of them are associated with water or thickets.

When I was a kid my dad and uncle used to say there was "wampus cats" in the woods, said they screamed like a women. Dad would plan with Uncle Toxie who lived up the road to walk out of the house at a certain of night when we'd be on the back porch and scream like a wampus cat. When we heard the scream, my dad would take off running toward the house hollering to get inside... wampus cats were on the prowl.... scared the crap out of me.

Til this day, I've been leary of wampus cats while walking thru the woods in the dark. Mean thing to do to little kids.

The wedding sucked, Neew Orleans was fun. We went fishing out of Destin this weekend, we didn't catch much but had a good time any way.

That story reminds me of my grandfather as well. He would always tell me a story of the wampus cat, he would tell me that it was a huge black cat that stayed in the bottom behind our house in Harrisvilleand that it made the meanest/ sickest screaching noise and to this day when i hunt there I always fear the "big ole wampus cat"

What are yalls thoughts on Panthers in Mississippi relative to are they original Florida Panthers thought to be extinct for 50 or 60 years or are they western cougars that moved in from Texas as a result of the deer population explosion that has occurred since the late 1960s?
