I agree that it's all about the multitude of variables. Unless the company has a set policy I can see it going either way. I let folks go as soon as I can get a check made up to square up on the pay. I don't want someone who is already on the other side of the fence taking care of my business. No hard feelings I just don't see how you could really focus 100% on something you are walking away from.

I'll also add that as an employer if you choose to not accept a persons notice. Then I think you should pay em...

If you work in the IT field, it is pretty common to get asked to leave immediately.

If you have vacation they have to pay you. Take your remaining vacation, start you new job and then give notice. Get paid x 2 for 2 weeks.

As a business owner when someone gives two weeks I settle up pay and send them on their way. Too often when they work the 2 weeks in my opinion they become "toxic" to work around for the rest of the staff. Morale goes down and often customer service goes down. I pay them for their 2 weeks and send them on their way.

Someone told me once that a true judge of character is not how you act when you start a new job, it is how you act when you quit your old job.

I gave a two weeks notice when I quit my last job. Before I gave my notice, I cleaned out my company truck, office, and removed anything personal from my laptop and phone. Since I was going to work for the competition, I was prepared to get told to "hit the road," which I was. They ended up paying me for my last two weeks, so that made a nice paid vacation.

You can't control how your employer acts when you give a two weeks notice, but you sure can control how you act.

Things on your computer can and will be used against you. Keep your personal and professional things separate. Use personal email for personal. Never works email. They may no do it, but they can read every word of it and you'll never know.

This man speaks the truth. IT security forensics are CRAZY these days... a process (not business process)may not be what is seems.

This thread is reminding me of one of my previous employers. When I left, they did not give me the 2 weeks pay, nor did they pay me for all of my vacation that I was due. Of course, I was fired for having integrity so I did not waste my time stooping to their level. In fact, when I was shown the door; they were a lot more upset than I was.

In IT its pretty much a given if you are in a tech support role or some other tech/admin role you are shown the door immediately and all accounts are disabled and/or passwords changed, however, upper mgmt or project mgmt you usually are allowed to stay and make sure all 'i's are dotted and 't's are crossed to ensure project completion and/or smooth transition. I actually worked out 3 and 4 week notices in my last 2 jobs in IT just to ensure no loss or gaps on projects.
