yesterday on the history channel "american eats" was "all about beer". pretty cool - one of the first breweries they featured was Yuengling. gave the history of how he brought over his own "starter" from germany and started his own brewery with it a few years later after some market research on where the best locataion would be. also the history behind bottles and Bud being available in bottles before the mechanized bottle blower was invented b/c adolphus knew it was on the verge of invention and that if he could keep the bottles going until then (others couldn't afford to) that it would have huge reprocussions on the market share later...and it did.

it will repeat again, but don't know when - may try history channel.com to look it up on the schedule if you're interested

had several new brews over the last couple of days and some that i haven't spoken of before.

rogue's chipotle ale -- leaves little doubt chipotle peppers were used either during the boil or thrown into a fermenter (can't tell which). very good, smoky flavor that has the bite of pepper to it. 36 IBU's balances out the pepper heat nicely

rogue's st. rogue's red ale -- 44 IBU's and dry hopped for more aroma and flavor. it's not "red" like a red stripe (which is one reason i shied away from it initially) but a deep copper color. pretty danged intense hop flavor....one of the best brew's i've found around town in a while honestly.

rogue's santa's reserve ale -- same base recipe (as far as i can tell) from the st. rogue red but a bit more hop burst....rogue states it's a double hopped version of the st. rogue red.....dang good brew.

samuel smith's IPA -- english IPA's tend to differ from american versions in a less intense hop flavor i.e. a better overall balance b/t the hops and malt character.....this one delivers. excellent offering

samuel smith's winter welcome -- Christmas in a bottle........enough said.

gator, that chipotle ale reminded me of a beer I had in kentucky at a brewery. It was a habenero ale and you were left with no doubt that it was there. almost a nutty flavor, though. very interesting ale.

the drink equivalent of a pineapple pizza: can't eat alot of it, but it is good in small doses.

i haven't had the southern hemisphere, yet - trying it tonight - looks tastey! After further review - Might-T Tastey!! and a nice buzz ta'boot!

when you get to b'ham to visit your brother, be sure and pick up plenty of Sweetwater IPA - it is the closest thing i've found to Alexander's Hop Ottin that was my favorite in Utah. bigbeeducker had one or two and can vouch.

isn't that beer yuengling made in latrobe,penn? I think thats what i drank when i was there a couple years ago for some training at a metal working facility up there.

Think that is Rolling Rock.

Bee you are or should i say were correct. rolling rock was in latrobe, but a few years ago they left town, i think they are in houston,tx now. but for some reason yuengling sticks in my head for some reason, i don't know why

Yuengling is brewed in Pottsville, PA. I dont know how far that is from latrobe, but maybe thats what you were thinking of.

great divide brewer's pack (pale ales, english ales, english porters), old rasputan's imperial stout, arcadia's hopmouth double IPA, delirium tremen's belgian strong ale, st. peter's old style english porter.

had a friend (yes, contrary to popular belief i have some) up in missouri this past week brings these back.

got an old rasputan chillin' right now, fixing to spend the day (or however long it takes) finishing some calls, listen to some music and drank some brews.

sweet! i've heard rave reviews about delirium tremens!

on a diet at the moment, so i'm only drinkin on the weekends so I've still got 3/4 case of 90min, 2 torpedo and 6 harvests left. tried to get the wife to get some sweetwater while she was in b'ham, but storms hit friday about the time she got back to b'ham on the way through, so she didn't stop.

enjoy. let me know how the double ipa is, looks mitey fine!

I was in Birmingham last weekend and had several of the Delirium. Be careful it doesn't take very many. I think its about 10% and it tastes very, very good!
