NWTF Recap

Duck season is long gone and turkeys are on the brain! With that being said I want to list a few things I saw last weekend as I attended the NWTF national convention in Nashville.

My wife and I go every year and it’s always interesting to see what new products are hitting the market for the upcoming spring. The funniest product I saw was probably a full strut gobbler decoy mounted on top of an RC truck. Decoys like that have their purpose and place in the woods but in my opinion that is taking it to the extreme. However I have to admit that my inner kid would not miss a chance to drive it straight at a longbeard just to see his reaction!

One thing I always love to see at the NWTF show is the amount of custom call makers. Don’t get me wrong, there are companies that make great calls but I really enjoy seeing more and more people using custom made turkey calls. A lot of blood, sweat and tears go into making each call and they are usually made by people who have a deep love for hunting turkeys, not just killing them for social media pictures. I will have a much longer piece on the custom call movement in the coming weeks.

Another topic that always comes from attending trade shows is the amount of crazy products and/or company names. There are usually a handful of booths with women dressed in extremely skimpy clothing trying to catch the eye of every “hunter” in the crowd. I will not discuss in detail the one that stood out the most to me this year but we discuss it thoroughly in this week’s edition of the On The X podcast. I promise you don’t want to miss it! We also go into great detail of the “go to” hunting destinations to harvest true blooded Osceola, Merriam, Rio and Goulds turkey. There has been a major misconception in the last few years regarding the areas in which people believe why they are hunting Merriams and Rios, but our good buddy and co-host Jake lays the truth down in the newest edition of the podcast as well. Until next week, have a great time in the outdoors scouting for turkeys and please make sure to let a kid tag along!
