Waiting for the right time to pull the trigger while duck hunting can mean a stringer full of ducks and smiling faces or empty hands and empty hulls. Every duck hunter faces the challenge in patience each day in the field. Duck hunters need to make sure they’re giving the birds time to get in close to make killing shots. We also need to make sure we’re giving ourselves time to make the shots.

We need to hold off and give ducks time to get in. Don’t make a move until they’re in close, and then and only then, call the shots. Puddle ducks frequently are dropping as they come in, but climbing as they leave. So as a result of that, you frequently have to shoot under that first duck and then over the top of a bird that’s flaring out of the decoys after the shooting starts.

I think the next tip would be save the easiest duck for last and take an outside bird first. Take a bird that’s on the outside first. After that, go for that fluttering candy bird that was hanging over the decoys. That’s going to be your best bet for getting a good clean double.

Third and finally, you have to focus and stay focused. Pick your targets and make your shots.

Here are a few key takeaways from this:

  • Make Sure You Give Birds Time To Get In
  • Make Sure They’re Where You Want Them To Be Before Calling The Shot
  • Make Sure You Are Leading Them In The Right Direction They Are Moving
  • Be Patient And Don’t Rush It
