Pyrootin'?

Should you spend the time, money and energy building a blind, or should you just spend this season hunting where the ducks are? "What is pyrootin'?" you may be asking yourself. Pyrootin' is what some folks in Louisiana call it when they just go out there and hunt by squating down in the bushes, reeds, or trees. Most blind hunters look down their noses at their pyrootin' brethren. But that high-falutin attitude comes to a screeching halt when the ducks aren't landing by their blind and they see all those pyrooters out there having all the fun. How about it boys and girls, do you stay with the blind no matter what, or do you move and get down and dirty? Jack

HEHE, I make that easy, put a blind on the boat and always go where the birds are. Plus don't have to invite poachers to hunt out of an already built blind. My lease has no built blinds for this reason, doesn't always keep the poachers off of it, but makes me feel better.

A good blind or pit is nice, but kinda defeating the purpose if the birds are else where.
Gotta' go with the birds

Hell I've been pyrootin for years. I will be the first to tell you I'd rather be in a blind or pit with a heater and fellin all cozy. BUT you better believe it that I'll pick up and follow the ducks in a heart beat. Its all bout being where the birds are!

Permanent blinds are for holes where the ducks ALWAYS are.....yeah right. 95% of the time, I am mobile. I may have three different spreads out at times if I am in the boat. If they aren't landing in your hole, the odds are they will not when you leave the dekes. Forget picking up and moving....just move! I have squated in more clumps of grass than most folks. Also, when I am in the timber, I wade and call until the birds start dropping in. I'll just drag the dog up on a log and hunt for a while and move on if the ducks quit working with my dog in tow.

My permanent blinds are for family outings with my 5 year old son, my father, and father-in-law. It's more of a visit than a hard core hunt but that's what is most important anyway. Every now and then, the birds will drop in like they used to before we put the blind there in the first place! It's easier to hide a boat or yourself than it is to hide a house on stilts.

Pyroot till the cows come home!

It is kinda like still hunting for ducks. I hunkered down in all types of logdumps, sippyholes and briar thickets. If you have to hunt in flooded timber or old fields you have no idea where the birds are going to be.

When the water aint so dang high, we're pyrooters right along with ya. But last year and this year too, it looks like we're jonboatrooters.

Half the fun is figuring out the right adjustment to get where they want in. One day last year we didn't kill diddly until the last adjustment...found a spot in the shade of a treetop in a pocket. Whatever it was about those conditions just looked good from the sky during that short window...never had any luck around there before.

'ol Phil Robertson always says the best kind of blind is no blind.

the particular area we hunt is about a 75 acre (maybe a little bigger) slough. the birds work about 3 or 4 different areas in this hole. we try to hunt a pre-determined spot, but if the birds like another spot in the hole we move...have done it NUMEROUS times. sometimes it meant moving 120 decoys a mere 50 yds, but it has usually always worked out for us. Heck, we have moved 3 times in the same morning hunt.

If we do not move at least 2 times a hunt, it is not a hunt.

Wow, 120 decoys, that's a serious spread. :D :D

You're right, you've got to do, what you've got to do for success.
