I wanted some input from the field on this Hevi Shot I see advertised so much in the magazines. Has any of you used it and if so, your comments on it. Is it really worth the hefty price. Just wondering??????????????

Opinions on this stuff are like......well, you know what.
Some people will go to their graves praising it while others will tell you it's all in the shooter and choosing your best shot.

I reload my shells and couldn't get the HS to pattern well in my guns. I actually prefer steel because it's cheaper and I know specifically what works and won't work in my specific guns.

In short, HeviShot is a great invention but I cannot say it is the cure all for waterfowling. The jury is still out on damage (if any) to gun barrels. Most manufacturers are recommending caution and are taking a wait and see attitude. Some of them are "doing research" on their barrels with it and I presume they will one day issue a policy on using the stuff in their guns.

A friend of mine hunts geese moreso than ducks. He used some Hevi-Shot last year and swears by it. He said he wouldnt use it on ducks but wont use anything else on geese.

I saw a report that convinced me to try some but I've yet to do it. I'm thinking of buying one box just to see for myself.

JUST MY OPINION, HAVEN'T EVEN SHOT THE STUFF,DON'T PLAN ON IT, I HAVE NO PROBLEM KILLING DUCKS WITH STEEL.

We used some on a hunt last year (3 hunters). Worked great. Ducks seemed to fall dead more. If you were on, they hit the water dead. What I bought at Macks last year was like $16 a box - I think it's gone up since Remington is distributing it. It made a believer out of us. However, I'll still be using steel some because of price. I usually shoot #2 or #3 3" steel. I'm going to try some 2-3/4" #4 HS this year - it's a little cheaper. Fact is, if you shoot 3-4 steel at each duck on the water then have to chase em, the extra money will be worth it.

We also used the Kent matrix as well, it worked pretty good too but not quite as good as the HS. More testing this year.

Thanks for the reports guys, I had some guys for AR last year tell me it was like shooting lead #6's again, everyone grave yard dead on the water and that you could shoot 6's instead of 2 or 4's for more shot in pattern. I don't know. To me the Kent 3" #4's was waxing them pretty good last year, but we are always looking for a little extra edge. Thanks

It IS like shooting lead 6's....if you can shoot, and don't take ridiculous out of range shots, you may actually spend less money shooting Hevi. I'm talking when you hit 'em, they splash and don't even wiggle. I'll be shooting some this year again.

hevi-shot, tungsten, bismuth are all they are quacked up to be. the price is unfortunate. There is no doubt if your on they can kill 'em dead. You can be on with the best of steel and still have to hope for a head shot. I've seen to many hard hit mallards fly off from steel. There is no telling how many cripples have been caused by steel. Love to see a study done on that as there was on lead. A great gunsmith I know said as soon as the H-S was available, beginning of last season, that it will damage your barrel. More so than steel. Its a toss up to which is most economical in the end. Three shot of steel or one of the other per bird. Nothing like decoying, feet down, backstroking ducks to make up for anything you are shooting.

I've shot Kent TM 5's for a couple of years now and I love it. Like Welldoggie said, it is like shooting lead. I purchased several boxes of the Hevishot and I intend to use them this year. As far as damaging your BBLS, I've shot chrome-lined BBLS for years and have never seen or measured any damage from steel or TM shot. All is know is that I really like to see um "drop like a rock" when I pull the trigger. I just wish that I hit um more often....

Pretty much agree with the crowd. Bought a box last season, and it really hammers' em. Been a long time since I seen a duck bleeding badly after the shot. this stuff really whacks'em but I just cant stomach the price!
