I leave today for a month on the "Upper Miss. River" as I will be part of the crew on the M.V. Mississippi which is a Army Corp Tug that does the "low water inspection tour" for the Miss. River Commision. I will be the First Mate and will meet the boat in Memphis. We will take the General of Miss.Valley Division and his staff up to St. Paul MN. and start the trip down, stopping at major cities along the river to host "town meetings" with the local politicos, etc. The afternoons will be an open house for the local populace! Will try to post a schedual in case we stop in your town. Y'all are invited to come see the largest tug on the river. It is 283' long(i think). Will know for sure this p.m. as the Mudsucker goes "Huck Finn"!!!!

It is actually a really informative town meeting to attend. It will give you a better prespective of how the Corps has to deal with the entire watershed rather than what runs in our backyard.

That would have been when I met Ben-BSing at Roberts place in Dundee back in Nov.

UPDATE: I am here on the "MISS." as I write this and will have internet by satillite. The vessel is 241' long by 56' wide, making it the largest in size and tonnage(displacment) on the river! It is in great shape with a new coat of paint on the outside and lots of shiny wax on the decks!.......More to follow later!

We left Memphrica around 1645(4:45pm for you landlubers) and headed out of the port northbound soon Mud Island and downtown Memphis was in view. Then I went to bed as I am on the "afterwatch"(midnight to 6am/noon to 6pm). Exciting so far, isn't it!!!!!

Came on watch just below Cario IL just before midnight this am. Got to see the Ohio river off to the right and got into the upper Mississippi and boy , it looks no bigger than a bayou up here!

We stopped at the landing at Cape Giraudeau from 7:30-11:00 a.m. I went for a walk of the first 3 streets off the river and came upon a sign that I took a pic of. Will try to post it later. It advertised a place named, "Rufus Mudsucker's Liquid Lounge"!!!!!!!

Nice flood wall mural on the land side that show the history of the area with relation to the river. Any one who comes through here ought to stop and see it! Nice "old" part of town too!
Huck Finn out!
