An evening with Coach Croom

Just left the Leflore Co. Civic Center. A crowd of over 400 got to hear one of the most uplifting speeches I have heard in a long time. With Coach C., accountability is everything. If you are late for class, it's the same as being late for practice. The man is a class act. I left there with a feeling that the sky is the limit with the football program. I don't expect much as far as bowl games and title contention this season, but do expect a team that want quit or beat itself. I am very impressed with Sylvester Croom. He will bring MSU the respect that we haven't had as far as winners in both the classroom and on the football field, but most importantly the game of life. He will bring in quality people. He is not a token, he is the real deal. I'm sold! 8)

Don--I totally agree with you! Heard coach Croom at MSU on Insurance Day speak and boy was I impressed. He would make a good preacher with that voice of his--like you I agree better days are ahead. I really think Bama missed the boat when they did not get Croom.

, that sounds like he is headed in the right direction, that's the reason I hated ol' "whacky Jackie" just seemed crooked as a snake. Not so much that he wasn't a good coach, but I never thought of him as a good person.

Yes, coach Croom is very impressive, I'm not so sure about the preacher part, we'll find out how serious he is within the next 2 to 3 years, actions speak louder than words. As far as Couch Sherrill, why does he seem crooked as a snake?, What about ol Goldie,- Cutcliffe, put him in a SUV! How is he so different for all of the other coaches in the SEC. I see it this way, he lasted 13 yrs. went to more bowl games & won more games "Period!" than any other coach in MSU history! I beleive his couching downfall was related to the many family tragedies, which in my opinion would bring any man or woman down to reality. No he is'nt perfect, but if you can cast the first stone, that would make you perfect baby!!!

first, Cutcliffe didn't buy goldie the SUV, a son of a booster did. Second, soon as Cutfliffe found out about it, goldie was gone, period. It was Cutcliffe who announced that McClendon had done wrong, not the NCAA violations committee. Sherrill's crookedness didn't just happen at State, he was probably alot better there. It's been documented that it occured at Pitt, A & M, and possibly now State. I really hope coach croom does a great job in starkville. All it can do is help football for the state of Mississippi.

I know Cutcliffe ain't perfect, but he's a heck of alot better than some of hte coaches we had before him (billy brewer comes to mind).

Let ole 24 chime in here boys! Check the records, Jackie's graduation rate ranks up there pretty good when compared to other SEC schools. So, I think classroom work was happening...considering what he had to work with. There ain't a lot of Einstein's with the athletic ability to play in this league.

I do think we need a coach with some personal character...

Speaking of that, I met Billy Brewer this past weekend. He's a changed man. Seems it started on the inside if you know what I mean.

Ya'll have a good day :D

Graduation rate's aren't that big a deal to me, although they are important there are a lot of things that change the rate besides the coaches (players leaving early, and as a result a school that has the most talent will have the most players that leave early and don't graduate). So Jackie may well have had a great graduation rate.

I was talking about his continuing problems with the NCAA, they followed him wherever he went. So yeah, I think he was a snake (not the only one of course, Jim Harrick being an obvious example of this). And as for casting stones, I've never broken an NCAA regulation, so I guess I get to throw stones when it comes to that

But, I'm glad to have a coach in Starkville that I can pull for with Croom there.

I have a question? How is the graduation rate for a coach figured up? Lets say you have Jonny Joe Joe the great running back that barely made it through high school and did poorly on the ACT/SAT. Now Four Year University wants him, but he does not have the grades to get in so they tell him to go to Two Year CC. He keeps up his RB skills and Two Year CC passes him (no matter if the grades are there or not) and now he hits Four Year University. His mind is set that if he can do OUTSTANDING during the fall football season he is draft bound. So, his season goes well, he ditches class (sound like a certain Deon/Neon?) and he heads to the draft yet never did worth a crap in his classes? Does this count towards the coach or is it only for students that have stayed the entire four years and are eligible to graduate or what?

No conspiracy.....just laughing at the notion of Sherrill taking care of graduation rates. Maybe the good grades were a result of athletes literally staying at a Holiday Inn.

"Are you a 3.0 student athlete at M$U?"

"No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night"

RIP EM-
You got me figured out! Glad someone doesn't take it so personally. We need to hunt sometime. :)
