Bigwater,
I hunt mostly rivers, ditches and flooded meadow. Almost all hunting in Jersey is Tidal. Meaning that a meadow off of a river at low tide may be a mud flat with wild rice, or other vegetation. As the tide comes up the meadow floods. As the tide receeds its a mud flat again. You need to be careful where you walk though. Duck Hunters in Jersey know about one thing MUD. This stuff is like quick sand. My brother still lives in NC, came up for a hunt shot a bird ( no dog with us at the time) and it fell on the otherside of the little water we had. I told him not to go after it, and that we would get it when the water came up. Bird was dead, sitting on the mud not going anywhere. He got to within 10 feet of it and ........ooops see ya later he was in mud over his waste. Couldn't get out. Thank god for push poles.
Puddle Ducks are mostly GreenWing, Blacks, Mallards and Woodies. We get a good share of Pintails and Widgeon too.
SNow and Canada geese out the booty
We hunt coastal as well. Almost all divers, but there are black ducks all over the state. You almost don't go out without shooting one or at one. Jersey is split into three zones for hunting (North, South and COastal). If a guy didn't mind the driving, he could hunt from October 10-14 until January 31 (no sundays in NJ) without missing a day. That doesn't count our resident goose season either from Sept 1-Sept 31.

COld as Hell!!!! It's not that bad. We only had a few days last year in SIngle Didgets or the teens. Winds never got worse than 30MPH....
(man am I nuts, come to think of it, that's cold)
Actually most of the hunting days in OCtober Novem and December are anywhere from 30-45 degrees with winds usually ranging from 5-15 mph.
But January can be outright miserable!!!!! Most of the hunting at that point is coastal, meadows and creeks are frozen. Two years my honey hole had about 1-2" ice. Didn't have enough time to bust a huge hole. So I made it about 5'x5'. Put 3 decoys in there. Black Ducks and Mallards where trying to land on top of each other.
You get use to it QUICK!!!!!!

Welcome, Duckin A! I was over in Charlotte, NC, yesterday. Nice town. There are a few initial questions to answer before you are given status of a full-fledged member. Answer carefully. (1) What do you think of NASCAR? (2) Given a choice of eating grits or getting poked in the eye with a sharp stick, which would you choose? (3) Given a choice of attending a Dixie Chicks concert or having a root canal, which would you choose? We'll get back to you. Oh yeah, learn this song:
"If heaven ain't alot like Dixie, I don't want to go.
If Heaven ain't alot like Dixie, I'd just as soon stay home.
If they don't have Grand Ole Opry, like they do in Tennessee,
Then send me to to Hell or New York City,
It'd be about the same to me!"
It's good to hear from our Nawthun bretheren . Please continue to share and come on down to visit. But don't ever think the War of Northern Aggression is really over. We'uns is just restin' and waitin' to recommense!

As for NASCAR- "North American Soccer Children Against Rollerblades". or the one with those little cars that go around that circle thingy really fast. I can watch it, I think those guys are insane, but I will be honest I don't follow it. I am all for Football and Hockey. Hockey is that game on skates, where the men get to hit each other with sticks, fist, shoulders. You know kinda like a Southern Family Reunion!!!:D:
Grits- You mean yous guys lick Sandpaper down there. Well they are OK, but I'd sure as hell choose a Cheese or Sweet Tater biscuit as my compliment of Hamburger steak or Two yokes and tater caserole. Of Course all is accompanied with Sweet Tea- and not the kind from a can or in powder form. Don't forget the Tabasco too (even in the tea)
Dixie Chicks vs. Root Canal- If I had to make a decision now on the two I'd say - Bypass the novaCaine and rip em all out with Pliers. Oy yeah then I could go to a dentist and deal with the root canal.

As for the war thing- We can discuss that at another time. I need to bring some of my buddies over here for that battle. Oh yeah we even have internet sites set up for Jersey Hunters.
