crowder critter wrote:why not allow a little corn if the deer herd is out of whack. it is one way to get the old doe nannies up under your tree. Pouring a little corn on the ground and feeding with large feeders which conjigate deer unnaturally are two different things. Spreading a little corn (not 100 pounds, I'm saying a couple pounds) under an oak tree is no different than a deer feeding on acorns. They will feed and move on, thus not spreading any diseases if any are present. Food plots cause deer to flock together which can spread disease, which will come anyway if we dont thin down the herds.

The feds may be in the air looking at fields for migaratory bird violations, but I can tell you the state is not. Our Wildlife department is the most under budgeted department in the state. I know what I am talking about I worked there and that is the reason I had to leave. Hard to make a living with a family and they start the officers out st 21000.00.
So lets say they go up and fly looking for people corning deer. They have to catch someone hunting over it for it to be illegal. You can hear someone hunting on a dove field, with all the shooting going on, that is an easy find. You may have to sit on a corn feeder for 2 weeks to catch a deer hunter you never know when they are going to be there. If all our officer just worked hunting over corn there would be no time for anything else, its a battle that will never be won.
Our laws are screwed you can feed them corn but you cant hunt over it. If they get disease from pulling them all to one area, then it needs to be illegal to put it out............period. The fine is so low some people do not care. We cited a guy one year and he had an envelope in his truk that said corn money. He had about 400.00 dollars in it and stated that was how many tickets he could pay for hunting over corn. The people who want to do it are going to do it.
I see from the survey the department is running that the public opinion is starting to sway also...........are people just giving up on the issue?

I think one of the reasons the poll show so much support is that the poll does not mention the "C" word. It says protien pellets. My guess is from this survey, Protein pellets will be legal soon. And then we can all argue about the difference between pellets and corn... Instead of Food Plots VS Corn..

From what I hear the Game and Fish department is so broke, they are not doing anything that is not absolutely necessarry. They are not burning up gas and flying around looking for corn piles. They may note it if they see one but they are not making special trips. So what if they find a pile, they have to be there when you are hunting it. Looking for folks hunting over corn is a waste of resources. My 2 cents.

I don't really care if game wardens even work during daylight hours. I would much rather have them catching spotlighters than I had them worrying about a corn pile.

if they wanna up their budgets, maybe they should work the corn thing harder....especially during bowseason, cause dang near everybody does it in the whole dang state. They could write as many tickets as they wanted if they tried hard enough. Not saying that they SHOULD, just that they COULD...

what is the difference between hunting over corn and setting up a feeder and feeding corn with a camera on a tree beside it. I have always heard that the reason corn is outlawed is because of disease issues. If that is the case, feeders should be outlawed in all circumstances, not just when hunting over it. It is ok to feed them in my backyard, but if I pull my bow out, then all of a sudden it is illegal. That is like snagging crappie, it is legal as long as you snag him in the head (gill plates and up to be more precise). Snag him in the tail, and you have to turn him loose. Some laws dont make sense to me. I aint real smart, but seems like snagging is snagging. Either it should be legal or illegal, not any in between. Too much room for gray areas in some of these laws, which I believe they want. That way politics can play its part.

camlock,
Fine money that comes off of tickets goes to the county, not MDWFP. The only thing we get is the cost of the license if they are caught hunting w/o a license.
Money in the MDWFP budget comes from license sales.

you fellows need to listen to Wingman, those fines and court cost goes to the county general funds and not to the MDWFP... Mr green-jeans {as you refer to them} is hanging on by the skin of their teeth... if you will review all the new provisions in the laws of game and fish, you Might notice that they are designed to provide Hunter success to provide future funding for their survival...{blame that on our law-makers in Jackson}. baiting-crossbows-modern powder H&R centerfire during primative weapon season, the list goes on and on to keep hunters happy and license sales up...let us not forget the tons of G&F moneys that were diverted to the Nissan plant in Jackson Ms. several years ago! {didn't know that-did you? } i could go on and on but i need to let it rest...

AH...learn something new everyday! Didn't know that...thanks bro
Well that sucks I think? Does the MDWFP pay the salaries of the wardens??? If so, they should get a cut of all their work...

No. don't raise the license fee. Raise the fee for hunting over corn to 500.00 Min amount, with all money going to MDWFP.. Don't punish those that are hunting legally, punish those hunting illegally...

Do some of you ever think before you decide to reply to a post or is it just a reflex response?
The Mississippi Department of Game and Fish know how much I support their efforts but for some of you to say raise the fines and give it to the department has not thought that statement out very well. Most all of the Wardens are great people but if you opened up the fines as being a means for them to get paid you are opening a can of worms that is sure to have a backlash.
Imagine how many constant trivial tickets would be issued yearly just to support the continued rise of the cost to support that department.
When you make the cause of their existence based on the fines they write many a bad thing can come from that and it doesn’t take a smart guy to know that.
Yes they need additional money and that is why I fought hard for them to issue the WMA permits. Hunter numbers are declining rapidly, more than 10,000 last year in Mississippi alone. There will be changes needed but putting their existence in the need to write tickets is a lose, lose agenda.
They are doing everything they can to promote the outdoors. It is through those license sales that will give them the needed funds to manage the states resources. You want to help then buy your kids a lifetime license, Take a neighbors kid hunting. Support the efforts they have in place and stand up for them with your representatives.
Raising Fines is not going to stop people from putting out corn. Already the economic value is changing our way of life when it comes to deer hunting. Seed industry and corn manufactures are gearing toward support of this nature. The vast majority support it for a number of reasons. To go after users in large numbers will only deflate the already degrading support that the department is getting.
