Dog training??

Postby hbrown » Fri Dec 19, 2003 4:12 pm

Contemplating on getting a hunting companion.. Any tips on some literature on training or some good trainers around the area. Also any thoughts on a breed would help also.

Second the online labs vote... Steve is my training partner and the best there is. He's the only person I know I think is smarter than me when it comes to dogs!

Breed choices? Well, ya got labs, and others. Me, Im partial to labs.

10 minute retreiver by john and amy dahl. And tritronics retreiver training by jim dobbs are 2 great books for someone on their first rodeo, and either will make a fine hunting dog.

Join a local retreiver club. Do it as soon as the season is over, even if its before you find a pup. Get around dog people and you'll soon find out what you want... plus it will give you the contacts to find the right kind of pup to make the whole thing work out! travis

I agree with goosebruce!!

The only things I have to add is you need to spend as much time as possible with your dog. Basically what I am getting at is if you can, make your dog an inside dog. This is a hassle for the simple fact of house training. But, in the long run he/she will be a much better dog. If for no other reason than you will be spending time with him/her ALL the time. Even when you are not "training" you will be barking off sit, stay, lay down, don't beg, etc.

All this will add to simple obedience. That is the basis of all training. And will help any professional trainer if that is the route you go.

As far as breed, that is a very subjective question. It all depends on you and your personal needs / wants. Labs are a great, all around, family pet and receiver. That was my first dog. My new dog is a chessie. Because I think that I can train her to be all that I want (which is alot when talking about a chessie). They are very similar to labs but are a lot more of a one person dog (where as any of my buddies could take my lab and hunt her), and much more hard headed . But chessies are totally driven in the field and will work all day for you.

I could define my opinions about duck dog breeds all day, my suggestion is do your home work. Both on the breed and the breeder.

I will add that if you go for a lab, give John Kabbes a call @ http://www.blueribbonkennels.com/
He is a great trainer and on ocassions has some pups. I have hunted over several pups that came from him and they have all been good dogs.

Nohere is just trying to stir it up! hehe.

Southern Flight hrc... meet in horn lake second tuesday of every month at 630 at dale evans resturant. We'll have an open training day in feb for sure. We've got members from bartlett tn, to grenada ms, to horseshoe lake ar. The best part of a dog club is a chance to meet people in your immedate area and form training groups close to you. We run ukc/hrc hunt tests, have an event in april in hernando, and sept in sardis. We have several social events thru the year, and several club training days. We've got people of all experience levels, from first time dog owners to succesful hunt test handlers, and a very knowledgable pro. Come check it out. travis

Nope don't have or will I need one of them purses. Matter of fact the
dog I am taking is currently being retooled to fit my program. He is a nice dog. Matter of fact I wouldn't mind owning him, he still has a long way to pass a Master Test but he should run a fair Sr. and definatly knock the bottom out of a Seasoned Test. Nothing wrong with the dog or for that matter with any English bred that I have trained in the past two years. I have put Sr. titles on 4 and passed Master test with 3 of the four, the fourth one is just 2 and titled Sr. in 4 straight. Not ready for poison birds so didn't run Master this fall hopefully he will come back in the spring. It's not the dog its the training.
