What is everyone's thoughts on the hiring of a new coach in Starkville? Any rumors who it could be? Who should it be? Do you think they will get pressured into hiring a black coach? Just wondering what other people are thinking about the situation.
new coach
I have heard alot of talk about Charlie Strong...don't know how much truth to that.

Rumor in Alabama is that MSU is looking at Sylvester Croom and Charlie Strong for the position. I don't know if there's any truth to it, but don't shoot the messenger.
Are you guys seeing many ducks over there yet?

Best bet is to hire the DC from Miami or Strong. Even Croom would be good, but I dont think he fits the M$U mold as well, plus he is a little older than the above mentioned.
Best bet: hire a black coach that has the capability. I would think M$U wouldn't do it to appeal the likes of Jesse Jackson, etc. But they should od it because it would be the best for the program. They could be the first in the SEC. Bama should have done it. M$U can get some great PR (god knows its not good right now), they will be able to recruit better than ever before, and one of these above mentioned coaches could definitely get the spark back in that program, even with NCAA sanctions approaching.

I'd vote for Strong. Good man, good character...best I can tell. I hope color is not an issue...doesn't need to be, at least. We need someone who will recruit the talent and hold the line on behavior. I will give Jackie Sherril his due...he has at least put State in a position to recruit a better candidate than would have been attracted before he came. We just need to take the next step..become a respected program in all phases of the word "respected."

I hope color is not an issue either. I just want someone who will be good for not only the program, but the school as well. I think Strong would be good. I think our offense is doing quite well with the new coordinator. Strong is a defense guy....I think with him being the head coach along with our new found offense, would make a potent combination.
I know everyone is glad to see Jackie go, but I have to agree with crow. You have to give Jackie credit where credit is due. He spoiled us. He showed us what it was like to win. Before him, we never knew what that felt like. Now, we have this unquenchable thirst in our mouths for winning. Everyone can taste it now and wants it again. We all remember those 4 or 5 years (from around 1995 to 2000) when we actually went to the SEC championship game and started one season at 8-0. I'm glad he introduced this feeling to the folks in Starkville. Best wishes to Jackie.
