? for Refrigeration Gurus

Postby crowder critter » Wed Oct 08, 2008 3:10 pm

My side by side refrigerator will only cool to 50 degrees on the fridge side, but it appears that the freezer side is working fine. Any suggestions on what I need to do to get the fridge back cooling?

check the fins/coils on the back side. They may be full of dust. THat will hamper it's cooling if the fins are dirty.

Sounds like a defrost problem,is there ice built up on the back wall of the freezer section? If it is it will most likely be 1 of 3 things, timer, defrost heater, or the defrost termination thermostat. Is the evaportor fan running.

the fan is running and the back wall of the freezer did have some build up.

Ok, it will most likely be the defrost problem that I mentioned above. There is really no way of telling which one it is, unless you take the back wall of the freezer off and ohm the heater and termination thermostat out with a ohmmeter.

Had a lot of problems with our GE GSS25QGPA doing that - got to where I would defrost it with a hairdryer and have to do it again in 2 weeks. I eneded up unplugging it for about 30 min and it reset the motherboard. I found lots of info here on how and what to ohm and test - http://applianceguru.com/forum1/2445.html if it isn't a GE, you can search that site and most likely find what you are looking for. You can push on the back panel of the freezer (inside) and tell if it is frozen - you will hear the ice crunch when you press on it.

i had a service tech look at the fridge. The defrost heater had gone bad. Thanks for the input, fellas.
