Crow, it kinda bothers me about what you said about not respecting any of the teams JWS has had at State. I don't know how JWS has wronged you so badly that you can't even respect the players. I played under JWS his first three years and I tell you now, he takes all the heat by his own design. If letting some kids dance on the field before a kickoff gets your team fired up, so be it. That funky dance landed State several recruits. Do you know how many times JWS was asked if he wanted them to do that dance? None, because he didn't like it and everyone knew it. He believes in letting kids play with a lot of emotion and that was one way to get the adrenaline pumping in the team. Whether you liked it or not it worked. How many trash talkers has State had. One- Fred Smoot. You can throw us all into the same barrell if you want to, thats your choice with your voice. I tell you right now the only trait that Fred Smoot and Justin Griffith have in common is their desire to win.
As far a JWS not being respected, you don't get around the coaching circles very much. Some people don't like him very much, but most all of them respect what he has done in his career.
My biggest disappointment with JWS this past year was him listening to upper echelon alumni to much. They put the heat on Joe Lee. Now, that was out of character for JWS. And it has cost him, and us, dearly.
All MSU fans, All this bad mouthing the team and JWS, is not the thing to do. The more negative air that we put around the program, the fewer recruits will want to come to State. The descision makers will determine who will coach State the next few years, not us.
Sorry Crow, not trying to single you out.

I payed my dues with the teams, They need to act like they have atleast made a tackle or big play before. All that jungle dancing is a bunch of junk and a disrespect to the program as a whole. It sho turned me off!
I guess I'm just ole fashioned in that way. The score will tell more and do more than any dancing.

Gadwall2, you're right, I have no fuss with players. But, I'll debate until my dying breath the concept that Jackie Sherrill is respected by his colleages. I jsut love football for the games sake, for the competition, manoy mano. I love the sportmanship of it, not the gamesmanship. I believe that you can defeat an opponent without humiliating him. I believe that you can lose with dignity without tearing down the victor. I hear what you say about Jackie Sherril, but I see what his teams do. I repeat, it is not about wins and loses! I guess I come from a day when a coach said "Don't do that" and you did "that" anyway; when you showed up at the fieldhouse the next day, your stuff was gone and so were you! When he said "get a haircut," you got a haircut. You did what the coach said, not because he was the coach, but because you cared so much about playing the game that you would shape your behavior around the coach's expectations. Say what you want, but the coach sets the vision of expectations, rewards those who work to achieve that vision, and punishes those who refuse to. Bottom line, the head coach sets the tone and tenor of the team. I don't blame the players...they are the instrument. The head coach is the conductor, and if there is no harmony, the fault lays at his feet. Gadwall2, I still have my cowbell, and I will be ringing it on the last day! Mississippi State will still be there long after I, you, and Jackie Sherrill are gone. I just want a program that Mothers, Dads, players, fans, and the whole state can be proud of. That has nothing to do with winning; it has everything to do with integrity! I just don't see that right now. And, no one feels worse about it than do I. I hope to meet you one day and swap Dawg tales. I'll buy!
Go24,
Jackie Sherill has only beaten LSU twice in his career, and only once at MSU. Even MSU fans know that the running back rolled into the endzone from a yard and a half out. [quote]Jackie Sherill has beaten Tenn, Fla, Bama, LSU.
The fact of the matter is if MSU does not fire him, their all time winningest coach will have a below 500 mark.

need a new head
I guess this post probably already has enough replies and alot of them speak my mind but I have to voice my own....I find myself being sympathetic toward JS because of the problems he's been through, but before all that.......
When we were "winning" (yes I have not forgotten), we were never consistent. We came up with some big plays when we needed them. We beat good teams when they were down. Sometimes we showed up and played well against good teams when they weren't down, but overall we have never been able to walk on the field on any given Saturday and play DISCIPLINED, consistent football. Since Sherrill came on board, you never know what kind of performance you are going to get, and I believe it all goes back to the attitude of the players which I believe is reflected by leadership.

Crow, I hear ya about listening and doing what the coach says. These players nowadays are very different from the kids who played in the 80's. And that statement goes beyond football players alone.
State is going through a time just like 95% of all programs go through. I just hate to see a man being blasted, the way JWS is now, after bringing it through the best football era it has ever been through. I am not willing to go back to the days of Felker and Bullard just to let someone say "Thats a shame to see those guys lose 95% of their ball games, but they got a lot of integrity". But on the same note, I don't want to end up like Texas A&M.
JWS has had losing squads before, but he has always followed them strong. The framework is there. I would hate for JWS to be booted before he got to really show off the most talented bunch of football players State has ever had.
Crow, glad you didn't take that the wrong way. We both bleed maroon. And, NO! I'm buying.

Here is the problem, in keeping sherrill, he blamed everything last year on all his assistants and let all of them go. Now we have his new assistants and still have the same sorry results. Is this over everbodies head, it seems pretty obvious to me the problem wasn't replaced. I would like a coach that spent as much time coaching during a game, that sherill spends writing during a game. The notes apparently arent helping. Down with sherill, its not personal its business, and if you dont believe its business wait and see how many are in the stands saturday night

HAVE A RICE DAY. FARMING TO HUNT.
Gadwall, you've played with JS and Delta Duck and I spent many hours on the practice field and sidelines during our time at State. I think the three of us can provide a lot more insight into what really goes on both on and off the field.
I think JS did a wonderful job with the teams when he had the talent and fire. We were fortunate to have Blade, Golliday, Wymms, Davis, Smoot, Bean, etc. It was those players - the defense - that won those games for us in the 90's.
With the losses in JS's life in the last 12 months I do not believe he has the will or the mental ability to lead this team back again. I have always felt that his teams lacked discipline. Discipline in the sense that the allowance of overly aggressive play kept us from winning games. I also blame him for playing Wayne Madkin too long. I also blame him for allowing Dontae Walker to gain 260 lbs prior to fall camp. I also blame him for the number of academic casualties increasing in the last 24 months. He can't go to class and take tests for them but he can make sure his tutors moniter every homework assignment and test prep. They don't need an A but a C can surely be maintained in the very basic classes SOME of these athletes take.
JS has done a lot for the program in the past but the last 4 yrs have been a steady decline. A decline I would give anything to see come to an end. Even if it means sacrificing JS.

Ok lets take our time and think about State like a coorperation. three years with no growth on the stock holders money (loses) when other stocks in the same group (SEC) perform well as a whole nationally. Corruption problems. (NCAA INvestigations), White Collar Crimes (Players in trouble with the law) Promise for perfomance, without any dividends being payed.(loses) loosing great potential employees to the big payers. etc etc.....
Now think how many CEo s still have jobs with a history like this, the board of directors have already been changed a few times at state but our CEO is still running our company into the ground.
I have heard great stories about JS compassion has a man ,but frankly as CEO of the MSU Bulldogs he is stinkin the place up pretty bad.
I too believe in playing with emotion, a kick off dance is fine for pre-game hype, but when your down by 28 in the first qtr eating humble pie you dont freakin celebrate a tackle. Now, if you come back and win the game 29-28 I dont care if you run down the field with your willie in your hand yelling who's your daddy!!!! LOL jk.... theres a time a nd place for celebrations and msu time and place is always wrong!!!!

LT doesn't have the gonads to do it since he needs to be fired himself!! I imagine Dr Lee will do the deed immediately after the season. That is....unless JS does the honorable thing and retires just before the Ole Miss game. Maybe we can make that a great way to end his career if State could pull out a win on the 100th Anniversary of the series. That would give JS a grand exit and would make everyone happy - both JS supporters and those who want change.
