Bible Question

Postby crowder critter » Mon May 21, 2007 2:46 pm

I have always heard that the Bible says that if someone commits suicide then they are condemned to hell. Is this stated directly in the Bible? Not thinking about killing myself, but I had a cousin to do this a few years back and was just wondering his fate.

well i believe that is more of a catholic thing, just because the bible they use has 3 more chapters. Im baptist and use the king james version and i dont recall it saying it, so I guess it really depends on what your faith is.

Different religions see that in different lights. I believe it is an interpreted things, nother words it's discussed and your quesiton is not DIRECTLY answered and religious belief derive their own conclusions...if that makes sense...

PERSONALLY...I don't believe that a suicide condemns you to hell as a baptist, not if you are saved...however, pentecostals do, I believe

I have looked for it several times, and never found it in the KJV. I figured that if it is in the Scripture then someone here could put me on it.

I have never seen it in The Bible. Never heard a Baptist preacher say it either.

Youth Minister here so take it for what it't worth. As a Christian first, then Baptist I belive once saved always saved. So no matter how you die if you are saved then you will not got to hell. As far as the Bible saying it I am not aware of anywhere in the Bible that says if you commit suicide you will go to hell.

Youth Minister here as well. Christian first, Free Will Baptist second. However, I have never read or interpreted scripture that says if you commit suicide you are condemned to hell, however, if you are a true Christian and have a close walk with the Lord, why would you want to commit suicide......Just something to ponder.

I've often heard people talk about "the impardonable sin" and claim it is a multitude of things...suicide being the one I hear most, taking the Lord's name in vain is the other.

I don't believe this. I believe dying without being saved is the impardonable sin. There is a verse that talks about blasphemy of the Holy Spirit in relation to this, but I can't find it right now. From what I understand, in this meaning, blasphemy is in essence calling the Holy Spirit a liar and choosing not to give in to the will of God and accept Jesus as your savior. If you haven't trusted Jesus as your personal savior, on Judgement Day your name will not be found in the book of life and you will not be allowed to spend eternity with God. All of us have sinned and will be judged one day. The only way to surpass that Judgement and not go to Hell is to be pardoned by Jesus. He gives you a choice to turn to Him or not. If you haven't been saved, He will say "depart from Me for I knew you not." Matthew 7:23

I could be wrong, but I just don't see how anything but dying unsaved will send you to Hell. If there was anything we could do that could nullify Jesus' sacrifice, something we could do that would be too much of a sin for Jesus' death to save us, then His death on the cross would be meaningless. Dying without accepting Him as your savior is what sends you to Hell.

And what does dying unsaved mean, or how does one becomed "saved"? Here is a hint...it has nothing to do with being good or good deeds.

Wingman is right......
Suicide is a terrible thing, and I am sure that God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit would not want a person to do it. I think it has to do with "Your body is a temple, and is to be regarded as such."
Why would you want to kill a temple of the Holy Spirit? Jesus himself referred to his body as a temple.
I believe suicide is a sin, but not one that sends you directly and automatically to hell.
I believe that if Jesus Christ is truly your Lord and Savior, that you would not want to commit suicide in the first place, but if you made a bad choice and did, I think that Jesus would forgive you and plead your case to God the Father to let you into heaven.

No, the Bible does not say that suicide sends you to hell. I always ask people who say that to find it for me---they never can.

Second Vatican council determined that there is no hell...

To the OP, determining your own path (or demise in this instance) is going Against the will of God. Bottom line.

At least that's my interpretation, for what its worth.
