decoy pattern

Postby deltadrake » Fri Nov 15, 2002 12:05 pm

Guys have a question about a particular spread problem. Here is the situation. I have a hole that I lease that ducks right not are killing. But they are mostly landing behind the blind in water. The blind sets in the middle of probably a twenty acre hole of water. What i am asking is suggestin on how to move the birds to the front and slow down the birds landing in the back?? thanks

mt - depends on the wind but you can try loading the front of the blind heavy with blocks with a few behind the blind. set a wad of teal or a family group of mallards up far off to one side and further out in front to pull the birds back around for a "look see" to get them working the dekes out front. don't know how big the hole is behind the blind, but if it's small enough...you can also load it heavy with dekes and plug the landing zone and create a controlled flare to push the birds back over the top of your blind.

Best suggestion is to go set up where they are landing and scrap the blind!

That sounds too technical to me softcall :? :? , why don't you just move closer to where they are trying to land.

look i live in duck country this family of decoys stuff is bogus. What you need to do is set your spread up like this.

1. Put 20 or 30 decoys probably just out of shoot ing range on the side that you are having the ducks land giving you good 15 to 20 yard shot if they happen to land behind you .

2. Put a big spread of two big sets on both sides of your blind. Leaving a 20 to 30 yard shoot ing path dead center .

3. Get ready to bust the hell out of some ducks.

Just chunk the decoys out there leaving a hole in front of the blind for the ducks to land in and shoot them before they can land behind you.

If all else fails, PYROOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if that ducks banded, I shot it.

calling ducks

Postby dukdawgn » Fri Nov 15, 2002 6:52 pm

Ever consider changing up your calling routine to fit your duck's flight pattern? You can raise ducks, can't you?

Spread your dekes out so that they must pull up and stop out to the side where the wind exits from your shot range. This will float any that do stop on the first try. If they pull around behind you, get into the callin act, and get them back up. If need be, set out a goose deke on the backside of your blind, or anything else that might throw them off.

Buy a quiver magnet, cut a flap into the top of an old decoy, and toss in the quiver magnet. One shaking duck will turn more real ones than you can shoot at.

Is this by any chance just a hole where you have to do some pass-shooting? If so, you will probably need to move your gun stand somewhere's else.

Take a sawz-all and cut a hole so you can shoot out the back side of the blind :D .

I always use 2 different groups of decoys, one on each side out front. I'll kinda fill in the outside edge..

Seems to work pretty good.

southboundanddown - never had anyone tell me that setting up groups off by themself in wads or "family groups" is bogus. I don't live in the delta but I have sure put countless hours over the past 25 years coming up with ideas on ducks that seem to work fine year after year. But to each his own, I don't claim to be a know it all.

MT - one suggestion that I seemed to have left out..if they are landing behind you, just turn around

Touche, I must have missed that closeing remark....

Anyway, I told you wrong about putting the dekes in the brush on that hunt with you and Grog and I. You're method works much better under that scenario.

We should have plenty of water to try it out together this year Softcall, if you can tear yourself away from your hunting camp long enough to come hunt with me.

I'll bet that if you get another call like this one you'll make the hunt:

Ya you were always terribly danger prone, I should blame the damage on you for holding the rope. What a great blowout to a hunting season that long weekend was. WOW!!!

Moral to the story, if you ever get a call that says something like:

Be at my house at 4 am, cancel any appointments, call in sick, quit your job, what ever you do, DO NOT MISS THIS HUNT.

I think those were my exact words to you Softcall, in that order. I hope to be giving you that same message again this year. Or MC, or maybe even GH22.

Are we there yet???

I hope I get to call you sometime this year making that same claim.
