Crop theft

I have a problem. People are coming onto my leased land and stealing ears of corn in large patches off the fields we planted for later flooding. I can see the tire tracks from the UTV in the morning and the neighbors hear them at night. I think they are deer hunters who want to bait deer but don't want to buy corn. A couple different groups are doing this. Is taking crops without permission considered a crime? Can I have them arrested as an example?

I would think taking anything of any value or not would be punishable with atleast a misdemeanor. Sure they would be easy to catch with some patience from law enforcement. This is one route to go. I'm sure there are many other suggestions lurking around such as spikes in tires or bird shot, etc.

I would think stealing of crops would be a big deal.......probably some laws we've never heard of because most aren't dumb enough to do it. There's some strange laws out there about putting your trash in other's dumpsters.......you can get smoked for that too........I forgot what it's called.

That's crazy. That would be an aweful lot of work to steal ears of corn. Don't they know it's less than $10 for a bag of the stuff? That would take a hell of a long time and effort to hand pick enough ears to use them as bait. Plus they are getting their scent all over it by handling every ear, so I doubt it would be half as well as shelled bags of corn. But I doubt you are dealing with high level thinkers here. I'd be more pissed about the trespassing, making ruts, and spooking the animals that use the fields at night. I'm sure trespassing would be the easy crime to stick them with.

surely if they are in a UTV they are traveling over a couple miles, maybe 5. And not every house within that 5 mile radius is going to have a UTV. Process of elimination?
