Postby 3seasons » Mon Oct 31, 2011 12:05 pm

Friend of mine killed this snake under his carport. It was 1.5' or so. These are the pics i have, no head. Sorry
No rattles or button.
Not real sure what it is but kinda leaning towards a copper head thats missing some pigments.

Looks like Copperhead markings.... but like you say... missing some of the colors.... I think the skin turns colors right before it sheds maybe.... but it is hard to believe it might change to that extent.

By the looks of it.... the snake recently ate.....

I'd almost say a juvenile cottonmouth..... they have similar markings to a copperhead..... that snake is mighty fat for it's length...... like a cottonmouth would be......

Definately not a copperhead. It looks an aweful lot like a pigmy Rattle snake, even though you said no rattles. Don't know if it might have lost it's rattles or never had them to start with.

My vote is a juvenile cottonmouth/water moccasin with a form of albinism where it is missing one of it's pigments..... in this case.... it is missing dull sort of brick red colored pigment.

First......where does your friend atay at? Is his hood here in Mississippi?

Second a snakes skin does not change colors before it sheds.....its eyes will sometimes cloud over.

Third I belive it to not big to be a juvenile copper head. Juvie copper heads look just like adults except that their tales are a lime green to chartruse color to aid them in catching prey

He lives is Lincoln County MS

I was thinking pigmy at first but it had a slick tail. thats why i was leaning more towards a copper head.

I was talking about the skin clouding over similar to the eyes..... "•Skin becomes dull or hazy in appearance (sometimes the belly may appear a little pink at first)"

IMHO... that snake looks to fat to be a copperhead.... especially at 18" long.

I still like the juvenile cottonmouth.... missing one of it's pigments.....

A pic of the head would at least settle whether it is a poisonous snake or not....
