Any idea what this might be?
Found this yesterday on the Little Sunflower. It left the bank, went out about 5 yards and made a right turn, ran about 15 yards, another right turn back to the bank. I'm thinking it might have been some type of fish trap. As the water goes down more, I may be able to get more pics.

When I was doing some fish sampling on the Luxapalila (sp) Creek in in Columbus we saw several. We were told they were Native American fish traps. I am assuming they were originally a lot taller and fish were herded in the opening.
Best I could come up with.

Is a fish trap
I ain't hunting, it's a tailgate party with shotguns.
Re: Any idea what this might be?
If it is a trap, probably functioned like a modern day hoop net. Fish swim into it as they naturally hug the bank at a pinch point and can't figure out how to get out (narrow opening).

Amazing how intuitive people can be when necessity for survival kicks in!

That's cool.

The proper term is "fish weir". I sat through a very lengthy presentation about them a few years ago.

makes you think twice about bailing off into unknown waters...especially when the water is up!

I know. There could be Indians lurking in the bushes.

Re: Any idea what this might be?
Wonder how you could get an estimate on how old it is? It's interesting because where this is it is a hole, one of the last places that holds water when things get dry. So I guess they were playing a numbers game waiting till they had them concentrated before tryng to catch them.
I wish this place had to some open land to look for other stuff. Obviously there was a camp of some type in the immediate area.

Just don't dive in head first or you can wear nose plugs. As long as you take those precautions you should be fine jumping in that spot.

I have no idea how you come up with a "fish trap" from that picture.
. But then again I ain't no Indian.
. I can't make much of anything out of the picture. I would be interested in seeing more picture's if the water gets lower though.

Google "Fish Weir" and look at the photos. It's basically a fence built out fom the bank. Thye either used a "v" gate or hereded them into it.Medicine Man wrote:I have no idea how you come up with a "fish trap" from that picture.. But then again I ain't no Indian.
