Anyone else reading his memoir book? The guy was a genius! Looking back, I realize he was so darned effective at doing anything he wanted.

I would summarize his leadership as "don't ever apologize or show weakness, never share more information than absolutely necessary, and make the system work in your favor." He understood Washington inside and out. He had contacts everywhere in the beltway, and he used them ruthlessly.

It seemed to work for him, but it certainly didn't win popularity contests or get the Bush Admin's message out to the constituency. I think he was successful because he created fear. I don't know if it would have worked without Republican control of the house, because that approach doesn't get bipartisan votes or build consensus.

In my opinion, if you can't apologize when you make a mistake you have little character.

IMO, the most affective leaders are those who can influence others through mutual respect and not fear. Reagan was a prime example, they might not have agreed with his politics but they respected the man.

He ruled with a heavy hand. He put the fear of god in mideastern countries. You mess with him and the military will deal with you.

I WAS a big fan of Cheney, have always admired his unapologetic style...but in the end he was too self serving. His book from the exerpts I've read validate that as he throws everybody under the bus but himself (43, Colin Powell, Condie Rice, Rumsfield...). He pretty much was the president during Bush's first term and during the second term he was nowhere to be seen. If they would have done their job effectively the republicans would still be in office. You are correct though, the man IS smart and definitely knew how to play the game in the beltway.

I think another character trait that is equally important is to not apologize for your stance on issues just to gain popularity or political favor.

Of course, some people (like those currently running our country) never make mistakes and everything that happens is someone else's fault, so apology isn't necessary.

But if you are one of the other mortals that inhabit the earth, learn to be a man and apologize for your mistakes.

I agree with you, Jimmy, don't apologize for your stance on an issue. If you believe in something, stand up for it.
