MDWFP Hosts Wildlife Management Area Public Meetings

JACKSON – The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) is hosting a series of six public meetings to discuss Wildlife Management Area (WMA) activities. These meetings will showcase regional WMA harvest data, wildlife habitat and infrastructure improvements, and regulations changes for the 2011-12 season. All WMA users, adjacent landowners, hunting clubs, and interested citizens are encouraged to attend.

“It is very important to the success of the Agency to meet with our customers and hear input from the public at every available opportunity,” said Ed Penny, MDWFP Wildlife Bureau Director. “These meetings will give us the opportunity to discuss our WMA system and listen to input about our management programs.”

The meetings will be from 7-9 pm on the dates and at the locations listed below:
• September 7th: North Delta WMAs at the Enid Fish Hatchery
• September 8th: South Delta WMAs at Hinds Community College – Vicksburg Branch
• September 13th: North WMAs at Tombigbee State Park in Tupelo
• September 14th: Southwest WMAs at the Copiah County Multipurpose Building in Gallman
• September 20nd: East Central WMAs at the Winston County Courthouse in Louisville
• October 18th: Southeast WMAs at East Central Community Center in Wade


MDWFP biologists and law enforcement officers will be in attendance to answer questions from the public.

They have these meetings in Missouri too! They don't listen to any concerns we have, hopefully MSDWFP will listen to ya'll. They went to a quickdraw bull here. It is a computer system you put in for mon-thurs on sundays and fri-sun on thursdays. You know whether or not your drawn before you go up there but the people that were putting in for was 3 times the normal. I didn't get drawn not one time last year. IT SUCKS!!!!! People have voiced their concern, but they are moving forward. The word is that they are going to make every area a quick draw by 2012. The way the ms dept like the Missouri waterfowl draw get ready for it to down there shortly.

The MDWFP are doing away with allocated stand by spots. In other words, they are going to pre season draw for every available hunting spot, leaving none for stand by hunters, unless a pre draw doesn't show up. So if Your Favorite WMA has 24 hunting spots, instead of pre drawing for 12 and leaving 12 available for stand bys, all 24 will be pre drawn....and since they are now charging $5 per application, there will be very few pre draws that don't show up.
Any of ya'll who stand by hunt on a south delta WMA need to come. We are gonna try to stop this new crap they are trying before it gets started. Hope to see several of yall there.

I will be there. I am glad they are doing this it will help with my phone bill, I was getting tired of calling them and bitching over the phone. But my biggest fear is that they coming to explain what they are doing and not there to listen to the voice of the people that actually utilize their resources.

Yall are probably right. They will tell us what they are going to do, but the Only way to get your point heard is to be there.

If you hunt public you should be there.

Why ar they not holding a meeting in Jackson? Seems like they could at least hold a meeting in Jackson, especially since the headquarters is located here.

Makes more sense to have a couple meetings in all different locations to get more of your local hunters in the areas to show up.

The more I think about this the more pissed i get. I am sure I should have already heard this but, I am a slacker. I agree with the 5 dollar charge to get a draw, it keeps unwanted people from applying. But when a WMA has to turn people away every day they allow hunting it doesn't make since to restrict the hunting opportunities even more.
