Birds and Tomatoes
how do you stop birds from pecking tomatoes? besides the obvious of not planting them. i have picked about 8-10 and all have been pecked up by the birds. green or getting ripe doesnt matter.

Re: Birds and Tomatoes
Put netting over the plants will work, but its a pain to deal with.
My parents put a bird bath out near their garden and it cut down on
the amount of damaged tomatos, guess a drink out of a bowl is easier
than pecking a tomato.

Re: Birds and Tomatoes
went out and looked at my tomatoes and they were all gone. i had some big ones too. I think squirrels got them. I saw a squirrel running across the yard the other day with a zuccini in its mouth.
Re: Birds and Tomatoes
dad wraps his in some kind of plastic mesh that looks like chicken wire but don't cut the hell out of your hands. it works for him

for exmaple you could kill a 4 greenheads (two banded), a mallard/black cross, and a mallard/gaddy cross and smash a hot blonde on the way back to the ramp and call it a hell of a day
Re: Birds and Tomatoes
hang moth balls off the side of pot or place them some distance from the plant.

Re: Birds and Tomatoes
Go down to the dollar store and buy a bunch of those toy rubber snakes and wrap them around the top of the plants.
Re: Birds and Tomatoes
I have been thinking about putting rubber snakes out, i just haven't gone to the store yet.
Re: Birds and Tomatoes
do the birds try to eat the rubber snakes, instead of the juicy tomatoes? do you wrap them around the stalk or out on the limbs?
Experience is a freakin' awesome teacher...
