SAND???

Postby Johnny Maness » Sat May 21, 2011 8:24 pm

Going to build a new kennel thinking about putting sand in it instead of. concrete. Concrete is hard on their feet and causes rough spots on their elboys would scoop up pen when I feed and water what do yall think?

Seems like it would be a magnet for fleas. They tend to really like sand. Just pour the concrete that is smooth, you can then slope it where the waste can be hosed out. The sand will absorb it all and it's gonna be a mess pretty quick.

While not an engineer I can't think of one reason to do sand over concrete.

You'll soon find the sand is outside the kennel, not in.
Sand will get hotter than the concrete if you left both in the sun.
Concrete doesn't stick to you when you get up from laying on it.
Critters will burrow down into the sand to live.
You can scoop out feces, but not urine.

I just purchased a pup from a guy that had sand down in his kennels. I had read this post and asked him bout it and this is what he said, "use mortar sand it is made from ground limestone and fleas don't like it.  As far as urine, he wets it down good daily and the urine is washed out.  The wetting down also makes it cooler.  Easy poop clean up is another plus." When I was at the kennel they all seemed real nice with the sand in there. He had a tin roof covering the kennels to keep them shaded.

I hate to burst your bubble, but mortar sand has nothing to do with limestone. All mortar sand is , is sand that has been processed (washed and screened). whoever told you that mortar sand was limestone based, has no clue what he/she is talking about. spend the money and pour a concrete slab, or don't pen your dog....
