I HAVE A 4 MONTH OLD LAB. I AM LOOKING FOR A LIVE DUCK, DOVE, PIDGEON TO SHACKLE FOR HER TO PLAY WITH AND EXCITE HER. I LIVE IN THE JACKSON AREA. DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND SOME BIRDS AND HOW MUCH THEY COST?

Some of you big time trainers jump in here (T-Bone, Goosebruce, Chuck McCall, Copiah Creek, Doc and Nash, etc.), but I am not so sure I would want to just let me dog play with a shackled bird. Now, if you are looking to toss the shackled or clipped wing bird out there for pup to retrieve, then I am with you. Letting the dog just go out and play with the shackled or clipped wing bird might cause problems later that you are allowing to take place now. You don't want to allow something to take place now that you might have to train out later.

For instance, you get ready to go training with your buddies. You all set up a mock started hunt test for yourself and pup. You are there at the line and your buddy launches the bird by whatever means, winger, buddy in the field, and you release your pup. Pup goes to the bird and beings to "play" with the bird.

If you want to work on retrievers with a live bird, I am with you, but I just am not so sure about just allowing the pup to play with the bird.

Anyway, maybe some of the guys that have trained to a higher level than me will jump in here.

excite her? At 4 months old, everything in her world ought to make her be excited. I like early introduction to birds, but I dont use a lot of birds with most dogs until I can control their mouth (i.e. force fetch). Retreiving birds is good, playing with birds isn't. Also bird drive is differeve than retreriving drive, and some dogs at a young age with too many birds, loose it for bumpers. 4 months is right around teething age, ck dem toofs, and your need to 'excite' her may just be a sore mouth.... travis

Not sure what I can add to this. I would introduce the dog to birds, get the dog to understand birds are cool as hell. Tease the dog periodically with a live bird and let her fetch/hold it a time or two, then put it up. I would not want the dog to get "boored" with birds, or obsessed with birds only, or to start munching and pulling feathers. But in general, introduction of live birds to young dog is a good thing.

Get some wings instead of live birds. Use a long cord so that you can control the action. Don't let your pup just chew em up. As far as your pup's mouth is concerned, you just want the pup to be accustomed to feathers, not chewing and possibly killing live birds.
You want the pup to get used to whole birds, get some already dead ones. Fresh killed as possible. Pigeons come to mind. Not hard to find and at the cost of a shotgun shell.

Most everything has been said, but since you asked that I reply, I will. If your dog has never picked up a live bird, be prepared to watch him/her run out to it, look at it, sniff it, then come back to you as if to ask, "Where's my bumper?" That's what USUALLY occurs the first time you throw a live bird. Once you get the bird and wave it in front of him a few times, he'll pick it up and return. This is the only thing I would have to offer in addition to what has already been posted.

Spotlight and pellet gun is all that is needed. Throw in a little beer and boy the look on the cops faces when they pull up to the underpass as you are ready to shoot, priceless.
